How hot do they bake? Would it ruin shocks? Oil filters? Is there any type of masking that can make it through the bakeing with getting cooked in? I am considering coating some old mag wheels but would like just the rims coated and not the spokes. Local guy says it's too much h***le because he has to pull the tape before the bake.
well, I do multi colored rims all the time. check out my web www.YourPowderCoating.com it would ruin shocks, everything has to be baked at 375 - 400
My stuff gets masked. When I worked at a plasma spray place we masked things with tape that lived in a lot more heat than powder coat
The tape I saw was translucent blue. I think it is made by 3M. Most ovens are run around 350 F. Hope that helps.....
You can get a purpose made fibergl*** tape from Eastwood (expensive) or from a powder coat supply company. Regular masking tape will also work. It bakes on and has to be s****ed off. And then the surface has to be cleaned with laquer thinner to get the last remaining glue residue off.
ok, i'll spill the beans, on stuff i have to mask, i bake at 250 and use the blue painters tape, at 250, it doesnt destroy or melt the glue and comes off clean as a whistle. Bake time is increased but flow out is perfect. pssst, dont tell nobody
You got his number or business name? I' have never had any done, the local guy seems eager to do a good job, saw some wheels he did for a 70 SS and they looked good. That's about all i know.
In Plasma spray we used the fibergl*** tape. We would use yellow platers tape to mask for bead blast and then pull that off and install the fibergl*** tape. I quit that job in '79. Things may have changed since then.
There are low temperature powders, most is around 400F. Rubber bushings and seals will melt for sure. Silicone will stand up. We used the fancy blue high temperature tape, worked great.
I saw some clear green tape at my powder coating shop don't know what it was but left my stuff perfect even after 2 tears of sitting , waiting for final ***embly.
another dude here in Rapid that does a bad*** job and is super good to deal with and will do it just how you want is Justin out at extensive metalworks www.xtensivemetalworks.com/
