In my hudson right now I have a supposedly rebuilt 700R4. It only has first and third gear, somehow I lost second and fourth gear. Well I bought a service replacement out of a 1992 Firebird with a TPI 350. I am going to change the tailshaft housing and I figured while I am at it, I will add a shift kit to the transmission. What brand would you guys recommend?
im getting a 305/700r4 next week, but i was looking through the summit catalog and they had a lot of items for 700r4 includeding rebuild kits.
Contact Shifts. He will know. I have one of Dave's 700r4's with a shift kit installed by Dave. The car should be running later this summer. Send him a pm or he may see this post and respond. Crosley hangs around here sometimes, and will know, also.
i had the 700r4 rebuilt that was in my truck. i told the guy doing it to hop it up as if it were his own. he told me not to put a shift kit in the 700r4.he said the 700r4 is not as strong a tranny in that respect. he did say to use a corvette servo though which i did. that was 16000 miles ago. it shifts alot firmer that the way it did. it will not chirp the tires when it shifts. but i'm happy with it. i'd ask somebody near you about doing it. it would suck to have to pull it back out and have to do it over.
dehudso, your problem is that the O/D band is not functioning. It is either unhooked or there is a problem w/ the servo. Also, we use TransGo shift kits in all of our 700R4s, along with other mods. Feel free to call me if you need more info.PS, run real fast from the guy that said the 700R4 wasnt a strong tranny. If built CORRECTY, they can be damn near bulletproof. DAVE
I blew up my 700R4 on the way home from LA Roadster show in my truck. Got another one since the plantery gears went south with everything else. Here are some of the issues I have found since I just got done putting a new trans in my truck. 1. Some of the main shafts and tail housings are different lengths. 2. Some have steel gear for the pick up for the speedo and some have plastic gear for a regular speedo. 3. Some have different detent cables. These are some of the things that I have run into with my truck. Its a 89 chevy 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive short bed. good luck hope this helps.
Don't sweat it bigiron, I've found that the 700R4 is one of those things that if you ask 5 different people about it, you'll get 17 different opinions. I know I hated setting mine up, I was scared shitless about the detent cable setup and never did feel very comfortable that it wasn't goin to break. I was running the Holley carb and used their bracket, so I know if something did go wrong it would be their fault. Also, after having mine rebuilt, the "forward sprag" broke about a year later. Crosley said it was often overlooked in a rebuild, so you may want to put a new on in yours while you have it apart.
well for me like i said it was going in the parts truck and the last thing i want to be doing is working on instead of the 31 pu. yea i was nevous about not getting the cable right also. it's been no trouble 16,oo miles so far.
