for a steam powered car.......a British team headed up by the grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell hopes to set a new record at Bonneville in August to try and beat the 102 year old record of 127mph. pretty cool stuff...i'm sure some of you will be there to see it. at least you'll all be able to have a cup of tea if all else fails.....
The steam car record is 145.607 mph set in 1985 by the "Steamin' Demon" It was some kind of fiberglass exotic kit car (I think Masurarti) with a Bill Lear steam turbine engine built for San Francisco Muni Railway bus use. Turned out the bus's couldn't climb the hills and the engines were pulled.
how unlike the British press to be misinformed... they're hoping to run at over 200mph....should be quite a sight. (just read the above very interesting link) the 145mph wasn't backed up hence isn't valid.....cool stuff though!
Not true. All BNI records are established by a two-run average over the same or physical mile. i was there. the car made it's two runs and got the record. I don't believe they paid the extra bucks and jumped through the hoops to applie for a FIA recore. But a BNI record is just as good and very real
sorry dude...maybe i wasn't clear....i just meant its a british team. oh and the girls are on page 3.
hey...you were there...i wasn't, just going from the info on the above link..... maybe in August it'll get cleared up.
The FIA record is recognized by the French and much of Europe. SCTA & BNI records are recognized by Americans. The Frenchies turn up their noses at our records just like they do most things "Americain".
I will wish the Brits well on this newest adventure. They currently hold the outright land speed record @ over 763 mph & the diesel record @ 328+ mph. I just wish that U.S. companies would support Americans in the quest to be the "fastest" in the world.
With all the hot rod types and USA knowhow, we should hold all these records. U.S. corporations would serve themselves well by sponsoring such attempts.
