It was by far the biggest show in Michigan, and I had a great time. I was unable to stay for the awards presentation due to prior commitments. I am curious to know who the award winners were? Thanks for a great (yet hot and sweaty) day. -Joe
Hey Joe! Nice to see you and appreciate your business.I can only remember a couple:The 36(?)with the Caddy taillights won Best in Show and I gave the striping award to Bill Whetstone for that kick*** truck of his striped by Butcher out of Phoenix.Would like to go on but I just got home and I am wrung out. TTYL Ray
the hoodless 40 won best in show. and the crazy truck with the canteleaver air ride suspension won some award but i dindt hear what. and that lime green 60 something ford something with huge skirts won somthing too. im beat as hell. i cant even remember what that ford was i think it was a t-bird
I'm pretty fried, so forgive me if I cant remember them all. Also I need to get a space for names on the window cards for this show like all the other Billetproof shows so that I can post names as well. Best of Show - the black 40 coupe with flathead and 3-2's. It was VERY understated but nicely done with lots of period correct touches. The body work was GREAT, the interior was perfect, the engine nicely presented. Sometimes less is more, particularly if its done in period and with attention to detail. I have the winners name on his biz card... somewhere in the mess of packed Billetproof stuff. Will have it once I get home. Just a stunning car. Best Hot Rod - The chopped black coupe with the blower, 6-2's, scooped/finned brakes, polished frame and pinstriping everywhere Best Custom - the *****in Green T-Bird from the Kingsman parked on the lawn area. the club pics one of the members cars to work over every winter and this one was the clubs project for this year. They got it done just in time for this show. NICELY done car. Best Truck - The slammed, lowered, chopped, channeled, aircraft inspired Model a that was drawing a crowd all day. In brown primer it was sitting about half way down along the fence to the raceway.
Best Pinstriping - Bill Whetstone for that kick*** truck of his striped by Butcher out of Phoenix. The lines were very understated but they enhanced the lines of the truck VERY well. The tear drops on the tail gate were perfection and the only complicated lines were in a place where they drew your eye to a nice detail in the bed. The colors set of the gloss black VERY well. Big Flake - the multi-colored Triumph chopper that had every surface of paintable metal HEAVILY flaked. Body Basher - the primer grey 46 Chevy Coupe that had the front end all molded into a one piece reverse opening hood, all seems smoothed and all windows flush mounted.
Best Bike - the NICELY done Silver Harley with dual M53 carbs and LOTS of homemade (yet perfectly stock looking) parts. a NICELY done bike. Best Interior - The purple Merc from the Kingsman. Nicely done, mostly stock, but yet a few touched that set it off. The right pinstriping here and there, some chromed pieces and very well done tuck and roll. Jive Bomber - now normally this goes to the biggest junk pile. Not this year. There was a GREAT Model A sitting on stock rails and stock ride height with a Merc Flathead in it. Completely natural patina on the engine, frame and body. Broke out rear window, some missing bits here and there, but just enough to get it down the road. It wasnt "pretty" but it was all there and if you squinted just right you could see a very traditional hot rod about to emerge. I gave this car Jive Bomber as it looked as if someone had neglected a hot rod for say, 50 years and it was freshly pulled out of river and recommissioned for the show. No negative connotation to the award this year.
I saw the Best of Show car on my way in. He and a group were parked in town at the breakfast joint and we oogled it then. We decided by 10:30 it was best of show because you were going to have to go a long way to top that. A few tried but I'm glad to say, today no one did. That car made my heart sing!
Go here and you can get most of the winners with a few extra photos thrown in for good measure http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=270812&showall=1
