    hi,
I have a question on chevy flywheels(not flexplate).
I am pulling out a 350 motor and using a 400.but you can't use the 350 flywheel on the 400 or the 400 on a 350/305. but can I use a weighted balance plate with the 350 fywheel on the 400 motor? Or just buy the correct flywheel.
    Can anyone help out?
    Thanks Russ

Speedway sells a balance plate to go behind the flywheel. I did this but starter would not disengage so bought a balanced Hays wheel. The plate must work for most, though. Try it for the $15 or so it costs.

i had a 400 sbc in my 50 coupe used a 400 flywheel with a 400 starter the 350 flywheel causes a vibration and i was told that a 350 starter would grind you can buy flyweel new from gm i think if not i have one pm me

  4. 400's are kinda tough. We always recomend the correct flywheel. The weighted plate has too many problems. It seems like the 400's have a harmonic cycle of vibrations that come and go. It's hard to get them perfect. If we have the choice we swing the complete assembly, clutch, and pressure-plate, in the balancer whenever possible.>>>>.

the 400 and 454 are both externaly balanced. A flywheel out of a 454 will work too.

Wrong. While both 400s and 454s are externally balanced, they are of different balance and are not interchangeable. Also, General Motors has discontinued the 400 standard shift flywheel.

I ran a 400 sb in one of my 69 el Caminos. I agree with Engine Pro. An authentic 400 flywheel is worth the $ in time you save jacking with the crank-mounted weight. Match the tooth count to the one you currently have on the 350 and you will be fine using your present starter.

  8. 454 has more bob weight than a 400 thus needing more of a counter weight. Bad idea to just try to swap a 454 for a 400. G-M quit making them, then I think I'll hold on to my nos 400-sb standard flywheel>>>>.

    Did some research.
    GM OEM # 340298, 3991404

    Pioneer Inc. #FRA-104 (w/weight)
    168 Tooth 12-14 pitch

    My cost=$20
Walk in at CSK/Kragen price is prolly 35 bucks or so.

Sorry, my brain wasn't on straight. Now, I'll look for a flywheel instead of a flexplate...duh.

    OK,
Standard Flywheels part # 6567 (168 tooth weighted)
    My cost $43.14
Walk in price prolly $80 or so (also at CSK/Kragen/Checker)
don't tell them where you got the $43 price please

Now's a good time to but that hi-torque mini starter. It will fit both flywheel diameters. Father's day gift ideas!

No it won't. 400 is only drilled for staggered starter mount.

Staggered is 168 tooth only. If you want 153 tooth you must drill and tap a straight across hole. The inline hole mini starters have two pairs of inline holes to allow shifting for the big wheel.

Good to know. I've tapped two blocks for 153 tooth and T5. I'll go CSR next time.
