Matching Gold paint. I'm a little frustrated!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Jun 12, 2008.

  1. OK, hear me out. My engine is painted with Plasticote Universal Gold paint. I would like to paint my dash, steering colum and the scallops on the car the same color. I picked up what I thought was a good match and did the dash and colum already and I'm not happy with the match. I went to my local Car Quest who sells Sherwin Williams paint and tried to find a match. No luck. It seems all of the chips/formulas they had use a silver flake for there metallic in the paint. Granted this is the first place I tried and they only carry SW paints. Should I go to a place that has a scanner? There is a PPG dealer not to far. I also have a dealer that sells Spies/Hekler near me. Any other thoughts or ideas? Here's a pic of the motor. Thanks as always, Todd

why not use the same paint you used on the engine??????

  3. It's rattle can engine paint. I would like to get something a little better if I could.

  4. Anyone else?????

  5. Use the rattle can . The secret to painting on your finish coat is keeping a wet line , especially with rattle cans . By wet line I mean you cannot let the paint dry out as you are spaying keep going back over what you just painted to keep it wet . This will give you a consistant gloss finish . Another rule - never try to put a lot of paint on at once .Again especially true with rattle cans since you can't control the ratio and speed of the reducer . Use thin coats for the first two or three , then go to finish coats .using the wet line technique . Next rule - let your paint tack up between coats or you'll have have it running down onto your shoes (unless you paint barefoot) . Your first coats will be a sealers and surfacers so gloss is not an issue so don't try for it . The finish coat which will be a bit heavier will provide the gloss . I hope this isn't too much information I tend to get wound up on techincal things.
p.s. Gold and silver are about the two hardest to match because of the picgment migration during spraying

paint a test panel with the engine paint, take it to a paint supplier with a scanner. they should be able to come up with a formula. hope this helps.

hey,Tug , I am a painter by trade (a**** other things) and so far all of the advice given is spot-on ,but, make them give you a test sample of their test results so you don't have 2 be dissapointed again. S-w has some excellent coatings if you go that route House of Kolor might be able to do you one better with their urethanes for the effect your lookin for. Best of luck!

  8. Thanks for the replys. Will the rattle can paint hold up ok? I'm sure it will be fine on the dash and colum but I was wondering on the scallops. I did shoot a test panel so I will take it to a place that has a scanner and see what they can come up with.

  9. I don't know about where you are from, but most of the auto paint stores around here don't have the ability to actually do a sprayout.

The best you will get is something that is "bench tinted". Once it is sprayed out it may be a little off.

Thats what I was going to say.....might be easier and less frustrating than running around everywhere and still not matching it close. Im sure you could get the same color in a heat resitant paint for the motor....just an idea...good luck...:)

I'm not a painter, but couldn't you use the same paint from the engine and then just spray a nice clear coat on it to make it look nicer?

Like RodKnocker and a bunch of others say use the rattle bomb on the dash and column and scallops. Then go out and get a nice rattle bomb clear coat and cover up all the paint you just sprayed for that sweet finish. This should make it last longer and be stronger than just he plain paint. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT CLEAR COAT!! Make sure the clear will work with that same gold paint because it it doesnt it will either come out flat or worse make all the paint crack. Just my thoughts -Jon
