302 SBF C4 Transmission - Torque Converter Questions

    Just rebuilt my mid 70-81 C4 transmission, also replaced the torque convert. I believe I got the correct replacement torque converter however i've got a issue.

    After sliding the torque converter inside the transmission and seated in the pump, the ridges of the torque converter hits the pump / bell housing bolts. Using a straight edge the pilot of the converter is definitely inside the bell housing. By pulling the torque converter about 1/16 of an inch it stops rubbing the bolts. Is this normal or do I have the wrong torque converter? Here are the specifics on the torque converter. O'Reillys Special Stock converter. This was the first time i have ever rebuilt a automatic.

    I haven't tried bolting up the tranny to the engine.. its a 13.30" flywheel.

    I think yer Ok, that gives clearance to start the nuts, that will pull the converter forward a little. Check with a straight edge. Measure flex plate to block, measure torque converter to trans. You know what I mean?

    Bolt it to your flexplate. Take your plugs out, turn over the motor SLOW by hand, listen, you'll know quick if somethings wrong. I think mine was the same way untill I bolted it up.

    when you bolt it up it will be fine make sure if converter has a drain plug to line it up with the hole in the flexplate

    The converter will need to slide forward when you bolt the trans up. If you think that the stator shaft or input shaft are wrong outer diameter you could be mismatched early and late.

    I had a guy rebuild my C4 when I put in a rebuilt 302 in my '74 F-100 a few years ago. I put the tranny in and out 3 times. Everytime I touqued the bolts for the final time the flywheel wouldn't turn over. He gave me the wrong torque converter that was marginally larger but hard to tell by lookin'. I was sure pissed after waisting a day & a half crawlin' under my truck half skinned up from the concrete driveway (the cardboard wore out).

    I rebuilt a couple of C4's and cannot recall the converter rubbing on the bell housing bolts. I would definitely check the converter depth using a correct converter (check with a transmission shop) to compare with what you have.
