..cfm's, pros/cons of using them, why they arent used more on hotrods....are they considered a model 2100? Just have heard that they flow around the 275-300 mark and thought that for guys needing some high cfms, why not use these, but dont hear much about them.
They were th HOT setup on a Bug back in the late 60's early 70's before Webers tool over. They were a ***** to tune on a VW. I dont know about V-8
They look like a Stromberg but have a 4 bolt base on them. The Bugsprays came in both a 200 and 300 CFM versions. I have often thought about using them instead of Strombergs. There has to be a bunch of them out there somewhere.
I used a Holley Bugspray carb on a '53 F-100 (8ba engine) with an Edelbrock 4-bbl manifold and a Trans-Dapt carb adapter. Good results. Much better than the 97s and 94s I had run, mainly, I felt, because it was a brand new carb that didn't leak and all parts were readily available. This was almost forty years ago...
my experience is if you wanna run a holley, you will be under the hood adjusting it alot, thats just with 4 bbls though, maybe its different for 2 bbls?
A good fuel system with a clean tank & good fuel filter will eliminate most of adjusting. Close attention to ignition & vacuum leaks will eliminate almost all the rest of the adjusting. 3-6 year rebuild window on a daily. I typically adjust them twice a year if they have a choke, cause summer & winter like different choke settings. But that's it. Not saying it's the case with you, but my buddies that constantly turn screws tend to do more harm than good. They're covering other issues, end up too far from baseline, & get lost. The bugsprays have peaked my interest........
So anyone know the model numbers for the 200 and 300 models....and is Bugspray an actual Holley term they used or was it just named by the gen pop.....also, are these "bugspray" carbs actually the 2100 models?.....They seem to the exactly what I am looking for but man, I cant find a lot of specs on them such as the model #'s and such. Thanks
Holley made a model#2110 ,part #R6244AA which is a 200cfm. A model#2110-c, part # R-4691-1AAA which is a300cfm. These were called "BUG SPRAY". These 2 carbs look alike. They also made another 300cfm carb called the" BUGGY SPRAY". Model #1901, part # R-6113-1AAA. This last carb was more of a "off-road" carb with adjustng needles and throttle shafts specially sealed to keep out dirt. It is a weird looking thing that has the fuel bowl mounted above the venturies. Ford used a carb in the mid to late 50's that looked the similiar. The 6244 and 4691 might work in a tri-power situation but I don't know about the 6113.
Thanks 38..exactly what I was looking for...now, gotta just find 3 of the 4691's and I'll be in business.....I sent and email to some of the larger carb shops asking about rebuild kits so once again, thanks a lot
Search the cl***ifieds at The Samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/ and check the local VW shops. Many bugsprays were replaced with Webers, Kadrons etc. over the years, so there should be plenty of them laying around.
That is ********, you know why? Most guys that say this about Holleys have only ever used worn-out,racer-abused swapmeet Holleys. A fresh one out of the box can be tuned once and run.
