http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=4488620&an=0&page=0&gonew=1#UNREAD I just copied the thread .. big pics, slow loading for dial up wonder if any of these old trucks and trailers exist anymore ?
Sweet! I'm at Dallas Auto Auction every week, and I always take a minute to check out the transporters in the lot...
I remember seeing an old GMC rig with an original 50's 5-car trailer on my trips out west. Owner had hung a big sign "NOT 4 SALE" on it. Truck was so cool, it gave me a ***** every time I saw it.
Speaking of auto transporters, one of my favorite stories about Henry Ford concerned the wheelbase of the Ford 9N tractor. Harry Ferguson wanted the wheelbase to be a few inches longer, but Henry insisted it be shorter because they could load one more tractor onto the transporters . This may have referred to railway cars and not to highway trailers, but it's still an interesting story.
I love the design of that first trailer. Knowing how good brakes were back in those days, some of these rigs look a little scary. The one that looks like it is homemade out of wood looks especially scary. Imagine getting some of those cars and trucks on and off these rigs too with tricky clutches, no power brakes and low powered motors. I like the double loaded scouts.
I likes me some rigs. Almost as much as cars. I've been driving trucks for eight years and am still amazed by the size and power. I've never pulled cars though. Never wanted to, too much sprung weight. Next time your behind a transpoter watch the trailer, they walk all over the place.
Auto Transporters.....(increased rate of respiration ensues). Those are some choice examples. I like the first one with the sort of Deco/Nautical look. Very fine. I'd like to know where the wooden one was operated.
Back in 80 there was a four car trailer with four 50s cars somewhere aroud the New Port Richey Florida area east of 19,I never did get a chance to go back and se if they are still there. Jeff
in the 'old days' Dodge trucks pulled the Mopar products, Ford always trailered other Fords, and the GM stuff had a Chevy or GMC up front
