Hey Guys- I'm starting my cheap T build and I am gathering parts, I need some recommendations on what rearends to look for, seems like a Ford 8.8 might be good, the truck that I got the 300 inline 6 from has a Ford 9 but I think it might be to wide, it's an 80 model F150, Anyway recommendations? Suggestions on the Ford 9 from the F150? Thanks Josh
i would say if your anywhere near 65-68 inches drum to drum you should be fine... you can adjust with the backspacing on your wheels... try this site, i'm a member, its a T-bucket based forum. alot of experienced builders and Tbucket projects galore. http://www.tbucketeers.com/
80's 2wd toyota pickup ....55ish and 57ish widths...4.5 pattern ...plenty of them out there... brandon
Yeah it seems that f150 axle is about 62 inches wide......to wide for a skinny tire modified? thats true lots of toyota pickup axles around, if I pckup a 4x4 its got 4.10 gearing.......I'm not sure if the 4x2 has the same gear or not?
This is true, after research I think the Ford axle is to wide......I want to run tall skinny tires, I might look for a toyota axle now, I think I can scrounge one cheap....... Also anyone know a length on a ford inline six 300? from say fan to bellhousing mounting surface?
ok i figured you were going wide tires the f150 rear is pretty wide... try an s-10 rear, alot run them.. or maybe an 8.8 from a ranger.. look for the 4 wheel drive units, they'll have limited slip and a decent gear ratio already
toyota 6lug is the same as chevy, which you can use 6lug 60's steelies if you had to. Just throwing that out there.
89 and 90 Ranger 4x4 is about 58 5/8 wide, mine came with 3.73 traction lok. The 4 cylinder 5 speeds came with 3.45, but they had small brakes. The brakes are interchangable if you do backing plates and drums off the bigger Ranger.
I would personally stick to the front-loader style like an 8" or 9" ford. There are others out there, 50s chevy and 70s chrysler come to mind. They have the smooth housing back, which IMO just looks better on something like a T where it's very exposed. Don't make the guy behind you look at a diff cover........
I figure it's worth mentioning this is the direction I am ultimatley going with this build (I hope) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170331
my t bucket has a 56 chevy rear end in it. the look from the rear is perfect not too wide or to skinny but my car was also bulit in the later 60's when a tri-5 rear was easy to find and didnt cost your right arm for parts.
