I am chopping down a 29 fordor in to a pickup. I was going to use the stock madel A frame but now I am thinking more along the lines of a 32 frame. The rear of the cab is pretty wide and I am thinking it will probably look better on a 32. I was wondering what is the cheapest way to acomplish this. If anyone has thoughs on how they did it I would like to here. Don't have the 1500 to drop on an after market frame.
You can get just the frame rails, they are a lot cheaper and then you can just make the crossmembers. There is a set of rails on ebay right now for $675. Of course since you already have an A frame you can use the front crossmember from that.
Check out Blackboard Hot Rods in Bakersfield, CA. their perimeter frames are around 1300 or complete ch***is with crossmembers is 1700. I have not yet dealt with them but my neighbor is considering them. Tom
There are several sources for rails for under 700 new. That may not hold up with the pri ces of steel but some hunting around on the popular sites should produce some results I'd also keep my ear open for someone in West Tx pulling out an original frame to install an aftermarket frame. You might pick up a whole ch***is for a reasonable price. Out there in the land of the 150 mile one way beer runs a couple of hundred mile road trip to get a frame should be a cakewalk.
Pay your dues and become a Alliance member on the HAMB then you can call up good folks such as VAPHEAD at Riley-Auto and order a set of his rails and boxing plates.
Keep in mind the cheapest way to do things isn't always the least expensive and the frame for your car is the foundation your building on.
Some years ago one of the car mags ran a tech article on building a 32 frame from scratch. Made of channel, it was a lot of work but sometimes time is easier to find than money. I wish I could remember which mag it was.
Seriously. I mean we all have our limitations when it comes to money but if you are not willing to spend the money on the most important part of your build then stick with the model a frame or save up and do it right. Your only other option is finding an original that is usable. There was just one on the HAMB cl***ifieds for $400 but it sold quick. I myself have been searching for one for a while. You get what you paid for and the frame is not something to play with.
Make your own. Mine has the outer perimeter dimensions of the 32. Total outlay for steel, less than $ 300
