Hey Guys, I am looking at pickup a 1981 F150 truck for a donor for my T-Bucket build..... I want to go with a short frame, duece grill, and tall skinny tires..... That truck has a 300 I6 and a 4 speed which I think might be a T170 4 speed overdrive....... So a few questions, anyone have a pic of a t with an I6 in it, and anyone know the length of a 300 from fan to bellhousing mounting surface? Also how hard is it to install a manual into a T, me thinks 3 pedals may be a little cramped if so I have a C6 laying around that should bolt right up..... Anyway just looking for opinions and insights. Thanks Josh
A C6 is overkill behind a 300; a C4 will hold the power, is smaller, lighter, and has less power absorbtion. In a small car like a T, these issues are even more important. If you want to gear the rear end for dig around town, an AOD will work, as well, but you will pay more for the extra gear.
Yeah I have a buddy with a C4, I am considering using a 2wd toyota rearend which will most likely be greared at 4.10
I'll let my friend know about this post, he has a 240 I6 and I understand that the 240 is identical [exterior] to a 300 I6.
heres dakota's its a chev 292 but you get the idea and a for the third pedal i go with an asen double or a f1 xross member and pedals under the floor
There have been a couple of "Red Baron" cars built by different folks. The "original" car won the Oakland Roadster show, has a Pontiac OHC six (not a Ford 300I), and currently resides in the Speedway Museum in Lincoln, NE
I figure it's worth mentioning this is the direction I am ultimatley going with this build (I hope) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=170331
300 Fords are tough as nails. You will never hurt it. Every question you could possibly have on the 300 can be answered at http://fordsix.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=5779ba975d6f7a2a972d63a59427f2e7 C6 is overkill, but if you have it, use it. I'd use the 9" that the truck has in it, but narrow it a little. Super tough and all parts are available everywhere. As for rear gears, the 300 has a ton of torque down low so 4.11's are not needed. It'll work very well with something in the 3.25-3.50 range. Also FRPP sells a wide ratio ge****t that would be a great upgrade. I say use it. I like 300's.
240/300 is one of Ford's best engines - they are damn near bullet proof. I'll second (or third/fourth) the C4 trans - the trans tunnel to clear a C6 will intrude on precious interior space.
Yeah, TJM73 nailed it. Go to fordsix.com and check out French Town Flyer's stuff. Mighty impressive. Another vote for the C4.
I'm putting a 300 bored .60 over in my 47 ford truck. I found a rebuilt c4 cheap. I'm a huge fan of the 300. My daily driver has one in it. I won't buy a new truck just because they don't offer it anymore. If you still need to know the length of the motor I can take measurements tonight
Go to Fordsix.com, or something like that. Its out there, I have it in my favorites as Ford Six Preformance 240/300 There's more info than you need there.
I already provided a link to the best place to get the info you are seeking. But here's a direct link to the FAQ for the Big Six 240/300. it contains a lot of info you should know about the 300's. http://fordsix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11348&sid=799d23cda6ae50f169c971d19e63043a Since you seem to not want to do your own research, even when I give you THE place to look and learn, and I recall this off the top of my head, it's about 36-37" over all in length. That's roughly fan to bellhousing mount.
Not entirely correct. Yes it makes more torque in lower RPM's. But the 302 make's 300 ft-lbs in 5.0 Mustangs while the best 300 made 265 ft-lbs. I believe standard 302's in mid 90's F150's made around 280 ft-lbs.
