I just had a great experience. My phone rings and the words I heard on the line were... "Hello, this is Gene Winfield." I began searching for an adult-size Depends! I actually called him earlier in the evening and left a message on his answering machine. To tell the truth, I really didn't expect him to actually call back. As some of you know I post art on the HAMB Friday Art Shows and Art Challenges. I'm researching one of his early cars and just couldn't find a color photo of the original "Thing" that he used to race on the lakes. Long story short... he told me it was purple and told me a bunch of others stuff about it. We talked about cars for a little while and he told me about some of the stuff he has done lately. In short, the man is a true gentleman, as so many others have said. Ever since I saw the Strip Star when I was 13 years old I have been a huge Winfield fan. Quite a thrill for this guy!
Yep, he is a genuine car guy. May be 81, but has more engery than most young guys. Definitely more talent. Saw him in his roadster at El Mirage testing for Bonneville- grinning ear to ear in the dust. Got my book from Barnes and Noble bookstore , members get 20% discount plus an online 10% discount coupon. Gene signed it for me at one of the many shows he goes to. There is also a poster that has the cover of the book and a few other pics from inside that he sells. Got one from him that he signed.
If you have not read the entire book you need to. I get excited by changing hubcaps and he builds a whole car from scratch. Has done a lot more than chop a few '50 Mercs.
Gene is the best. Got his book at Santa Maria. Cool pictures. Hey Scott, there is a Noteboom in the book. Any relation? Brian
