I have a 235 w/ a 3spd manual ******. I have been getting a whine when I climb the rpms in 2nd gear, when I down shift in 2nd gear it also whines quite loud. I was thinking that it may be a throw-out bearing? CheaterCarl said it wasn't It was very low on gear lube, I filled it, but the noise level stayed the same? I thought maybe the low lube, caused a lil friction or shavin' of gears, but wouldn't the proper lube fill quiet a problem like this? Is it a synchro? or a washer? I discovered last nite, if i shift from 1st to 3rd, there is lil to no noise, and shifts fine. I need this chevy ****** to be reliable. I am going from milwaukee to minnesotta to show at Nick Sinclair's art show in august. Please help, with any suggestions or instructions. Thanx!
It Ain't : A throw out bearing,or the syncro. No noise in 1 and 3 pretty well takes care of any bearing problems. That leaves gear wear as the most likely cause. Those old trans were not real quiet once they got some miles on them. Drain it and see if any metal chips etc. in the pan. Re -fill with 140 weight.
I'll trade you the 3-spd in my '64 chevy van, it's REAL noisy in first and kind of noisy in third, but quiet in second!
If it gets too annoying, find another transmission. Around here, you can't give a '49-'54 three speed away.
Well, really it isn't annoying, rather just, nervousness on my part. I know all the noises she makes. When she makes an unusual noise, i worry, I wonder if our relationship is going to break & if she'll leave ME on the side of the road WHINNIG,,,,,,,,, (hum,,,was I talkin' about cars here or women,,,well-- to me they are one in the same-Ha)
wheck out www.chevytalk.com those guys will know whats wrong and i bet someone has a spare trans laying around cheap! seems like most people are converting to open driveline setup and having a noisy trans is a good reason to do it! T5 and s10 4x4 rear and your in business.
Throw in a bottle of Lucas HD Oil Stabilizer, fill remainder with oil. Put in some ear plugs and wind up your radio.
These 3 speeds last for a very long time. I got the original ones in both my rides. When I got my truck, the ****** had no lube at all and was bone dry inside...! The synchros were gone, but it lasted for another 10 years and 85K miles of daily driving, including freeways. After rebuilding it was and still is whining, which I kind a like. The one in my car is quiet however in 3rd. The countergear is supported on bushings. In trucks, the countergear rides on needle bearings.
