I've got a Gennie shifter in my Model A with a 302/c4. I dig the look of the shifter, but have always been bothered by the lack of "positive feel" for each gear. The shifter seems to just row through the gears without a real notch or detent. Is this normal?

Also, does anyone have instructions for properly adjusting the neutral safety switch. After having the tranny out recently, I was having difficulty getting the car to stay in park. Now that I have it adjusted so it stays in park, the car will start in reverse and/or drive and I can't seem to adjust it so the neutral safety switch functions properly.

My shifter came with an extra washer/shim . there is a shim on the nutral safty switch when you recieved it . one is thicker tnan the other. add or switch or remove the shims until the switch works properly

Wow go figure! I have a lokar and it's a little loosey goosey too! My friend's, however, same type and probably used more than mine, is pretty tight. Maybe it has to do with the install?!? although it seems sturdy enough to me

Unfortunately I bought the car with the shifter installed and don't have access to the instructions or any extra shims that may have come with the shifter.

I know there are instructions, if you do a google search you'll find some for at least adjusting the button, not sure about the neutral safety.

When I put mine in(secondhand) it was slop city until my friend and I basically adjusted anything that didn't run away from a ratchet! It's much better now but I still don't get the positive feel you're talking about, or at least not as much as I'd like. I'm trying tot hink if we adjusted a spring or something, it's been a while so I can't really remember.

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot you have a Gennie, not a Lokar. Not enough sleep last night!!! :D

For the record, I've got a Gennie shifter (no button), NOT a Lokar with a button.

  9. call gennie 877 743-6643, they'll fax them or email them to you, (they did for me)
They don't have a real "Positive" fell in each gear, even when adjusted right. I've used a hlaf dozen or so of them

  10. I've had a Gennie Shifter in the roadster for 13 years. Never given one bit of trouble. My shop ran most of the machined parts for Tom Phipps when he owned Gennie. When he sold it to Streamline, they took every facet of it in house. I know the shit we made was good. Cannot comment on the quality now.

I've got Gennie shifters in both my cars and I also put them in the customer cars I build. I've never had a problem with one, nice positive shift feel, easy to adjust, never jumps out of gear. The problems that people are having with them is because they either don't know how to adjust one or they don't take the time to adjust it properly. You can adjust how "positive" the shifting is and that will also prevent the shifter from jumping into neutral.
Now with the Lokars, I don't know, never used one. The guys that I know that ran a Lokar ended up switching to a Gennie. I'm not saying that they can't be adjusted to work right, I've just never messed with one.

Thanks guys. I've heard nothing but positive things about Gennie shifters. I just want to get mine working the way it should. I'll be at the Back to the 50's show this weekend. I'm sure they'll be there and I'll pick their brains a bit and hopefully get these issues resolved.

My Vicky runs a 289/C4 with a Gennie. No problems after 4 years.

Contact them, they will definitely help you out. If you get really stuck let me know and I can get you to the right people there.

  15. Gennie: You need to start with setting your tension by loosening the lock nut on the cross shaft (above neutral safety switch) and tightening it until it is comfortably snug when moved. Then adjust the shifter assembly forward or back with the allen bolts in the slots at the bottom until it is in a comfortable position. Then set your linkage by either shortening/lengthening the rod or readjusting the arm on the shifter (remove set screw first). As stated above you can change the neutral safety switch depth by removing/adding washers under it. Took me about half an hour to fine tune everything but made a huge difference.

I've used both Lokar and Gennie. The Gennie is way better and much easier to adjust.
I called Gennie and they immediately sent me a shim which I put in and it worked right away. No problems since then.
Lokar, on the other hand, took me a few hours of messing with to get it right.

  17. Never got the first and last lokar adjusted. Viberates so much at highway speed you have to rest your hand on it.
