Used to think I wanted a chopped merc sled. For like 30 years. Until this thread. Turns out I want a Hudson sled. Whoda thunk it.

    Thanks for the enlightenment.

As you cruise thru life there will be ones that get away. Don't let this one get away. Really is a special car.

the front end looks sick !!!! can you get a better front end pic of the grille?
    j.t.

  9. Didn't realize you had a late model frame under it. That's one way around the usual rear frame rail rot these get. Although if you didn't junk the back half of the stock floor/frame and it's solid, you could probably sell it - no one repops any of that stuff. About all that's made is an outer floor section for the front footwell.

What's the chassis donor? A 124-inch wheelbase with a 55 or so inch rear tread isn't that common.

  10. Yeah. I'm using an 84 Mercury Grand Marquis chassis. I had to stretch it 9 or 10 inches. (I can't remember the exact amount at the moment).

The car was someone's aborted "pro street" project when I got it. It had the rear cut out, and had a camaro clip welded in that was off by over 3/4 of an inch diagonally.

If I had the original stuff...I would have used it.

Someday, I dream of pulling the 460 out and putting in a 308/hydro combo in it...

" I wound up using a razor blade on the whole car. That pulled off most of the paint".

Wow! I've stripped paint a few different ways (media, da sander, stripper), but never with a blade!

Dig your Hudson bigtime! Great lines and the grille looks terrific!

Man, you have done a great job with that car. I don't think I'd bother swapping to a Hudson driveline though, lol.

The subtle chop is so choice.. and the grille looks great too. What are the plans for paint?

    the car looks great!

  14. How's the Marquis rearend fit the body? I guess not many rears will fit the stock springs because they're surprisingly narrow. And there ain't much room in the wheelwells, I had to put a tire on the one I towed home and had to jack it way up in the air to get it changed.

Hell yeah! It's getting better and better looking all the time.

  16. It's tight. The car is so low, I have to drop the rear end to get the wheels off. just part of the fun of having a low car right?

The car has the Mercury chassis in it, coils in the rear. I made the wheel wells myself.

    This car is BITCHIN.

You have made a beleiver out of me about 6 times now...

    Me-"Hudsons don't need a chop"
    H.C. "I chopped it."

    Killer.

ME-"A Chassis swap under a hudson would be a pain in the arse"
H.C. "The Chasis swap is from an otherwise disposable luxo barge. it was (relatively) easy"

    Rad.

ME- "The Hudson grille and Bumper look great."
H.C.- "after figuring out 10 different options, I decided this one looked the best"

    Daaaang!

    The Hits keep on comin!

Keep Your feet dry up there. Be careful.

and has it ever occurred to You, perhaps being a claims adjuster isn't Your calling in life?:D

oh and the car is amazing!!!

  22. Yeah. Someone does. I can't remember for the life of me who though. I know the re-pops are supposed to have a better mounting system. The originals only have one tiny set screw to hold them in the door. I remember the re-pops selling for 250.00 a pair or so...

I got mine off of ebay.

There is a t-bird place that does them-
last set I got was around 80 bucks or so...but they were "faithful reproductions"...so no major changes.

Wow that is nearly as cool as a Merc....Just kidding, Looks like it will be killer when done. What color are you going with.

  25. Where can I get a set? I'm gonna need another pair for my 39 Zephyr.

Gloss black and the copper/bronze color on the Chrisman coupe for the wheels and interior accents.

  29. I have enjoyed watching this build. I have a '48 hudson that was on the back burner until I saw yours. Thanks for the inspiration!!!! Hopefully I'll have it on the road by Labor Day.

You did a great job with everything on this car. First you saved it, then did a nice job with the frame transplant, great chop and nice taste on the front grill treatment. Well done !
