It should run more than 55 mph. try fordsix.com lots of 6 cyl experience there.

You must have transmission problems. Depending on whether you have a manual or an automatic:Slipping transmission? Not getting into third gear? Slipping clutch?

I know for a fact that a stock 200 6 cyl. in a Fairlane will go nearly 120 mph. I got out run by one in 1979. I was in a '68 Torino with a stock 302, with a top speed of about 115 mph.

you can go up to a 250 but the 300 is a different size, its bigger and too long to fit. why not go with a v-8 you dont have to upgrade the suspension on the 62-65's.
