I'm starting to collect parts for my model a build. I need to know what direction to go for the rear brakes. I'm running ft disc brakes with a 5x4 1/2 bolt pattern. I would like to leave the banjo rear end for looks mostly, because its going to be 4 cylinder powered, so I don't plan on making high horse power. Can I find rear drums or rear disc brakes to fit the banjo, while retaining a 5x4 1/2 bolt pattern? I am not trying to build a traditional rod I want a comfortable driver.
I like the 46-48 brakes with floating/self-centering shoes. As these early Ford brakes do not self-adjust, they are easier to adjust for idiots like me than the 40-45 style (2 adjustments vs 4). Lots of ways to put them on. Rotate the backing plates forward to clear the spring perches, or swap side-to-side and mount upside-down. The latter makes it real clean to run the parking brake. If you are using the Model A banjo, you will have to machine about an 1/8" off the axle backing plate mounting flange, or the inner lip of the drum and the outer edge of the backing plate for clearance. I have head of some guys using axle taper shims, but it's kind of a work around and I've never heard of it being the recommended way to go. Either way, you will also have to chamber the outer 1/4" of the shoes so they don't rub on the inside of the drum. Use the mid 50's F250 set up to get the self-adjusting feature.
Gashog: The 39-42 brakes only need the bottom anchor adjusted when relining the shoes, all later adjustments are done with the top adjusters. But I'm with you much prefer the 46-48s yeah I'm lazy !!
I don't want to go through the trouble of putting in a 9" if I don't need it, but good brakes are a safety issue I don't know about you, but I want my friends and family to have a safe ride. With the older ford hydraulic brakes where do I find the 5x4 1/2 hubs and drums?
