well she made it home, 5 hours round trip. and enough michigan road construction then you can shake a stick at, but its home. Rolling it off the trailor. Tried like hell to get it started... ....But no luck. Verry Nice intake i must say. Home made split exaust, nice tone too. The carbs are a little sketchy, it was started and loaded undrer it own power, but it didnt want to start unless it was huffing ether. that and it was very sluggish after only two trys cranking, the generator and battery were susspected of being on their last leg by the past owner. took it for a spin back home and the clutch needs a big adjustment too, but shit everything works, from the vaccume wipers to the glovebox light, and everything is old as hell or stock. once the cars are revuilt and the things converted to alternator and 12V,(dads car, his rules), the fun will be had. Honest Charley it only has 2 cancer holes on it, drivers floor and passenger grill/fender meet. everything else is the about 5 layers of paint chipping off.
It looks a lot better in your drive way. Hey you guys look like that Nascar team trying to start that car in three pit lengths today. Will the white roll and pleat clean up? It looks to be in pretty fair shape from the photos.
Haha. Well, we had the idea of rolling it down the street as fast as we could, (roads closed about 100' down from us), then popping it, quickly relized how dumb we could end up looking and decided to park it. as far as the interior, thats after a light spray with 'Tuff Stuff' leather and fabric cleaner, and a shitty rag to wipe, i bet if i took the time with some decent cleaner, i could get that interior to shine, it is all Naguhyde, headliner, seats, kickpanels (in trunk), and they are all really good condition. but the carpet on the doors, and whats supposed to be on the floors is shot to hell. its gonna be a fun one.
a thanks to you both. what can i say, I have a sickness, most kids my age are driving hondas & wearing Holister and fitch or whatever the fark it is. me, i drive Classics. Thats my happy place right there.
another thing, which is the best part to me. was seeing my dads face when he drove it. he's 67 years old and his first couple of cars were all 50-51 chevys. he remembers replacing transmissions in his highschool parking lot, and since he didnt want to do it in the rain he did it sitting inside the car. But he hasn't had another one since then, to see that smile on his face, was really cool to see.
its good to see that you have your dad is involved , the interior looks to be in pretty decent shape , nice score , congrats !
Prould to see another one back on the road. Soon Hopefully.I have three 50 4 doors in different stages all limited due to budget.Keep us posted . Congratulations!! GUS
Alright, I saw that beast on Craigslist, I am glad it went to a good home! I've got a '50 so welcome to the family.
yeah, i guess the 2 hours a night for about a week searching all over for the right one was worth it. Dad's a little worried about the engine, just like anyone would about their new car tht has some problems, but im sure it will work out. Ol' Drippy, Yeah, i was suprised it stayed up there as long as it did, i thought SOMEONE had to see it too, not just us. Best part today was i got the 'El Toro' horn to work, the cable snapped from the pivot arm not wanting to free, i freed it up and got a lil' Moo from it. Carb rebuild kits are on their way from Washington, soon as they get here the fun will start.
And, anybody happen to have a 1950 Michigan license plate? Doesnt matter the condition as long as its readable and not registered.
one question to ask is, how the hell would i figure if its leather or vinal/Nughahyde? because if i did already condem it, id like to know.
those carbs look like rochesters and napa sells echlin rebuild kits for them, part# 2-5158 under $15 bucks
55 dude, Yep Rodchesters they are. But my father already called "Chevies Of the 40's", who stock pretty much everything for rebuilding/restoration, and ordered two rebuild kits already, $17 a peice i belive, what can you do right. I've seen some jenky work done befor, but i've never seen radiator hose used as a spacer for a air cleaner, just replace them today, elements were collapsed and the screws for the hose style clams were stripped too.
HaHa, well at least your not 3 projects deep. The 50'= Carb rebuild, repaint, 12V convertion, select wire replace, replace drivers floorpan. The 58'= Finish wireing entire car, install (rear brakes, driveshaft, steering linkage, brakelines, interior, lights, exaust, shocks, shifter, gas pedal, new intake and carb), Paint and new rims, Redrill all chrome holes and re-attatch chrome, replace busted windows. The 56'= Finish the paint on the doors & fenders, re-finish doors wires, install interior components, put the chrome back on. I Think its safe to say the 58' wins biggest project out of the 3.
Those edmunds manifolds are badassed and local to my area, i need one for my 54. Is your 50' still 216 or has it been switched to 235?
The intake is pretty cool, you see a lot of Edelbrock & Offenhouser, rarely do you see Edmunds. its still rolling powered by the 216, no blowby out of the draft tube, WHEN it starts it runs strong, dad slowy brought it to some high RMP's and it sounded berautiful, and has the original transmission still behind it too with all its stock guts. other then the intake & headers, the drivetrain hasnt been touched in a while. my buddy used to race with I6's back in the day, has a lot of speed parts for them, who knows if i can get dad to give his little Mo' Door some more Pep.
I wouldnt bother adding anymore speed parts unless you switch to 235, even switching to a stock 235 would increase the pep alot.
yeah. if the clutch wasnt so outta adjustment it would probally be better, but when the thing catches and inch from top pedal, thats no good. it was pretty nice when we drove it down the street, honestly i was surprised. hell i think its got more tourqe them my Montes V6...or the monte engine just sucks.
also, it really is ok with the 216, its just a car to drive like i said because dads other car gets 9 MPG city and my 58's not done, on the short trips like local shows and drives he gets the 56' and i get the 50', on long drives to shows like the flushing A&W and stuff like that we will both take the 50'. when i get my 58' done, i get my own.
well, it should of been done sooner but she runs. After tapping the carbs a decent amount and turning the Pice-0-shyte fuel pressure regulator past the #5 setting, it cranked right over and ran like a top. poped the 58's battery in it, 12V, didnt change the coil or anything else, ran 10 times better. so its getting the swap indefinatly now. plus, im 50/50 on this, i've always thought Camaro rallys were shit when they had their finned caps and brushed rings, but oddly, i kinda like them on the 50.
