That is some awesome planning, right there. A section doesn't just plop together nice and easy like that without really thinking it out....and maybe a little luck? ;) Looks great! The fins remind me of Junior Conway's shoebox back in the 50's.

Its funny, this was going to be the beater, the 40 was the "real deal". Isn't it funny how sometimes a certain car will tug at your heat strings and this is the outcome? I've been there before. Out of all the slugs Ive owned, my old $300 55 Olds Holiday 4 dr ht is one of the most missed, go figure.

Looks great, I was wishy washy on it as its really not my style, but you have an eye that is undeniably sharp and period focused. Nothing is out of proportion, just over the top dream car styling. Go get em!

    Keep it going.

Looks great..do NOT listen to anybody who tells you to lose the fins...If I walked up to this car at a show,I'd wonder if it was a survivor..the fins are NOT too big, they're just right on that car, accented by the sectioning...in the length of time you've spent on the sectioning,I might be able to find my Sharpie and saw blades...amazing

This car is not really my style, but it is coming together great. Sectioning it was the right decision, and I think you took just the right amount out. Really nice proportions. What did you use to cut the panels?

Ya know, I didn't really get what you were going for at first. The section brings it together. The Fairlane sidetrim will work perfectly. Very clean, elegant design. You are to be commended, sir.

Some day, greasy fingernailed people will be saying that they wish they were aroung in the oughts (early 21st century) so they might have met guys like you, Jim. Thanks for keeping the true style of customs alive.

yeah chris,,i hear you....this car kinda snuck up on me,,,
it even surprised me,,because 90% of the time i do something, i stick to my plan pretty closely,,,for example,,,the 41 caddy was exactly what i had in my head from day one.
i still love the 40 merc,,it's just a lot of $$ tied up in something i won't get to in quite a while...one thing i've learned is that just because you WANT something, its not always practical...trust me,,if i was rich, i'd keep most, if not all of my cars,,
one thing i can say for sure is that one day i WILL have my 36 3 window,,,,dont know how it'll all play out yet,,,but it WILL happen,,,,,,

  20. I thought the fins looked out of place, and I don't like sectioned shoeboxes... then you sectioned it and well, it's killer. The fins now look right and the subtle section doesn't look too pancaked.

Nice work. Looking forward to seeing more.

you're insane! looks awesome! every update makes me like the car more and more...i hope you can't fit in this thing so we can make a trade for my unchopped unsectioned shoebox! haha

have decided on the rear wheel openings? radius? skirts? stock?
did you ever decide on taillights yet?

saw you're selling the small block ford...goin back to flathead?!

if it were my car...id go with radius wheel wells with some chrome reverse

Hey Jim, nice job. From what I can see in the pics you thought things through in the firewall area, etc. I can't wait to see it again in person since the last time was on the day of the chop. I hope to get there to see it after the front clip is done but before you sell the car. :)

Seriously, nice work. Next time, invite us to help! I can appreciate your drive to do it alone believe me, but a few of us missed out on the chance to be a part of another great experience. Remember, every chop, every section, every notched frame... it all adds up to years of experience that we can all use to keep this way of life going and spreading it around. Okay, I'm off my soap box now. Oh, one more thing... (see photo).

I was'nt quite feeling the fins in the beginning, but now it has all come together. The only way to describe this cas is ****ING BAD ***! The cool thing about watching your progress is I get almost instant gratification. At this rate you will be completely done by next week- Wednesday. Great stuff. Really.
