as much as I love old carbs, you probably wouldnt see half your investment come back within a few years at the 10k+ price. make an offer on the lot and I'd be interested in some stromberg WW stuff though.

"The most pouplar carb #'s are probably not even part of what you'ld be buying. Why? Because they sold. You're basically buying unsold stock."

    Of course.

They've already been picked over - there are no Stromberg 97s, etc. Anything good was already sold individually. You're only getting the ones that have not sold in 30 years.

Don't even think about it - pass it by.

So the 'guy' says some are worth $200 each....why isn't he trying to sell them ?? Like most of the previous posts, $2500 sounds fair unless you find alot of muscle car carbs, or matched pairs. You will only be able to sell them as cores unless you are willing to cover the warranty. Post the list and maybe as a group we can help you make the buy.:D

All of this talk about selling them and breaking even. Really stop and think about the time factor. Taking pictures, listing the carbs, answering at least 1-10 stupid questions about each carb, collecting the money, and shipping. It sounds like a full time job for a while. I've been there and done that. Unless the inventory is really good stuff, and it's cheap I would skip it myself. But that's me.

The guy has a list and he has NOT been able to unload the ones he is trying to sell ... What makes you think you can do better ?

    Maybe ... maybe not.

If you plan to go ahead and consider this, make it Very specific...go to list and rate the cars they go to. Carbs for cars that interest rodders and restorers...good. Carbs for cars no one remembers or lusts after...bad. 1961 Checker, etc., phooey. Most base level carbs may be bad too...cars with sixes and base eights were parted out (or rodded with different carbs) to supply the cars with performance options, and have ceased to exist. There are probably 50 GTO's left for every two barrel Tempest that still exists.
Also, whole time periods have vanished...seems like every car made from about 1973 t0 1985 has been scrapped, and no one misses them.
If there aren't a bunch of carbs for cars people actually want, punt. Don't try to generalize, rate them car by car. And...aside from the deteriorated rubber and gaskets from age, many commercial rebuilds are incorrect, and so will be little more than some clean castings to a restorer. A dirty old original may well be more desireable than a rebuild in many cases...all the right parts are still there.

rebuilt more than a couple years ago means time for another rebuild.

  11. When we sell old carbs we get $5 one barrell $10 two bbl and $ 20 four bbl. Rebuilt or not that is what they are. And they are hard to sell. Buy them at a scrap price or pass something else will turn up.OldWolf

It's really unusual these days to come across a wholesale lot of any kind of old parts that hasn't already been picked over for the good stuff. Particularly from someone with any experience in what they are selling. Value depends on exactly what is there. 500 carbs of unknown pedigree could be worth as little as $500 or more than $50K.

My first thought when I saw the title of this thread was, "Man, I'd like to see the intake manifold'...

  15. Just my opinion, but it seems that even if you could find a 500 carb intake it would be hard to run that setup on the street.

Maybe if you had a progressive linkage.

  16. Take a look on eBay and see what rebuilds or NOS carbs go for. Unless it's a Stromberg 49/97 or a 4bbl anything with the right number on it, $40 is a stretch.

On the other hand if you can get them reasonable and have the room, sit on them. Scrap is so high right now, 4 or 5 years down the road, you should be able to command $50 a shot even for core 1bbls. You won't make enough to retire on, but worst case you can always scrap them - I don't think scrap is going to come down anytime soon. I got $300 the other day for what amounted to half a car with no body at all.

  17. July 1st. Its going down. The overseas guys are refusing shipments at the current prices.
It is going to go down alot.

    As per my buyer.

So hack it it up if you've got it.

I'd try to get the pile for $1500-$2000. No way would I pay more than $2500. You're gonna have heaps of unsaleable carbs on your hands.

Why not just send him a note that you don't know what you're doing? It'd pretty much say the same thing. Not a very good negotiation tactic IMO. Knowing when to walk away is the key to getting a good deal. good luck

  20. If they are such a good deal, why is the seller wanting to get out from under them?....You could make much more, and faster with your investment on a better item...I'd run from it!! Its a very big gamble just to recover your investment..

When I speculate on buying a part for resale, I ask myself "can I get three times that for it?". I need to know right away that it will sell for 300%, or the investment isn't really worth the trouble. If I'm guessing about it, I'm usually wrong.

Do you really think you could sell 500 old carbs for $30,000? Let some other sucker have that "killer deal".

I bought 75 carbs at an auction once so I could get the 97's that were in the lot. They made me take them all... I had dreams a IDing them all and selling them off one by one... No go, I sold / traded off the 97's and gave away the rest....

my opinion is the same as everyone elses... If you have the time, yeah, go for it, but you'll find that people really areent interested in used cards unless they're rare as hell
