I have a friend who had a bunch of old junk ( and I do mean JUNK ) laying around before he passed away recently. His widow asked me to help clean the clutter up. ( rest assured ... NOTHING worth anything went to the scrap yard :) ) . The junk crossed the scales at just over 3 hundred dollars a ton. She gets half and I get half. :D

I have junked well over 500 cars in my life ... but I cannot believe the price stuff is bringing. More and more OLD STUFF will be going to China with these prices. A crappy old Pinto with just a little bit of yard clutter thrown inside crossed the scales @ 332 dollars.

Just imagine what a mid 60's Lincoln or Cadillac brings :(

I have a junk aluminum (i think) pg out of a 65 nova I have been trying to get rid of. If I bring in it for scrap, how much of a pain will it be to pull it apart enough to get the aluminum price?

My scrap yard has a price specifically for "uncleaned" transmissions. Probably about 20 cents a pound. Picking it clean will get you more but if you don't want to dink with it they'll take it as-is.

Personally, around here the stock car guys will buy powerglides whether they're good or not.

Last time I took steel in it was way down. Goes up and down every week. If it's at 300 now I'm going to clean out a lot of shit. Let China have all of my scrap. Evens out the trade defecit a little.

That was the main purpose of this thread. :)

Not to complain or moan about stuff going to the scrap yard ... But SO ...some HAMBers might clean up their junk piles and have a few bucks in the pockets.
ALSO ... keep a watch out for thieves ... trying to steal metal that is easy to get too. Had a friend lose 3 old junkers off his farm the other day ... and they were stolen by someone with a rollback truck

around here most guys are giving them away or trying to sell them for $50.

  11. Rumor is it's going to take off again - $300, $400 a ton not out of the question for when you bring the junk car into them. Right now we're getting $200. I took in a '60 Cad frame, motor, trans, suspension, AA rearend, '47 Cad frontend and an Olds 307 motor and got $300 for it all - at $180 a ton -

So now that '64 Gran Prix is going. The frame under it is falling apart anyways.

After that I have half an S10 and an Imperial shell, and that's pretty much all I want to scrap, but if it goes way high I may think about parting out more cars.

I was at an auction last weekend. They sold 45 cars there. Most went for 300-500 each and the junk guys bought them to smash. I gave them each a handfull of cash and they let me cut whatever I wanted off of the cars. It was a win/win situation I believe. I really didn't want to drag any whole cars home with me. Most would have broke in half loading them on the trailer anyway.

My brother and I are actually considering spending the 4th of July holiday pulling three generations of junk hog feeders and kitchen appliances out of the family ditch at the back of the farm. It is kind of ironic that this crap that hasn't been worth hauling off since the 30's is now going to China. I can't think of anthing I'd rather do while on vacation!

Last week three guys I know got their catalytic converters cut off of their trucks in the commuter lot while they were at work. Who knows how many have been hit.... I consider myself lucky. I was parked in the same lot on the same day and didn't get hit.

  20. Can we have a moratorium on these threads....or can someone at least tell me if bold text is the new preferred bitching/moaning typeface? I thought I'm supposed to use "O/T" when I'm about to complain...???

I did not see any "bitching/moaning" or complaining.
He was happy that he made some money hauling off some old scrap junk. I took it as a heads up that now might be a good time to clean up the junk and have some folding money, basically for free or a little labor. He helped a widow clean up her yard. She got money also.
Looks like a win-win to me. I think I need to round up some scrap for the weekend.

Gee...I wonder if China is building tanks and ships with our scrap steel and our money? I hope the scrap doesn't come back to our shores in a different shape. God save us! Frank

I thought the scrap prices had dropped.

A bunch of people have been telling me how I lost so much money by not getting rid of my old stuff.

China will never declare war on the US. I know this because if they do, we aren't going to pay them back that 9 trillion dollars we borrowed.

And it's not like all the scrap iron is going to China anyways. A lot of it goes to Canada where they make steel beams for buildings and shit like that. Even in my hometown the Brillion Iron Works produces a shitload of castings and they remelt a lot of clean scrap cast iron.

I'll have to check what the steel prices are here. A month or so ago it was up to 300, but a couple weeks ago it was way down around 170. If it's back up, I have at least 3 cars almost completely picked clean I could haul in.

What I love about these threads is that they usually have more posts complaining about them being OT than posts consistent with the thread. Lets see if we can get this one up to 1000 replies. GO TEAM!
