PS for 57-59 Fords

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Beep, Jun 25, 2008.

1. I see that Classic Ford offers a Power/front disc brake set up for the 57-59 Ford. Does anyone offer a PS system?

They came stock from Ford with PS as an option. You can find the stock setups for sale once in a while if you look around. You might be able to buy all of the parts to make a stock system from places like Macs or Carpenters.

If you are looking for rack and pinion, I came across this place a while back.

ABS Power brakes in Orange,California sells a PS Steering Gear box that bolts on to the original mounting area- you would have to shorten the sterring coloumn. you send them your Pitman arm and they will respline it for you. i am running one on my 1958 Bermuda Wagon.

4. Hey guys, I happened to be near a junk yard today that carries older cars. He has several 58-59-60 Fords. We looked and he came with all the pieces needed to install PS on my 59 Ranchero. This includes all the steering parts, linkages, brakets, pump, hoses, etal. Of course much of it will have to be rebuilt. He wants $225.00 for the whole bunch. He removes all the stuff from five different cars to make up the set. Is it worth that?

5. Yes it is worth it. But keep in mind 57-8 is the same and 59 is different.

Yblock and FE parts are different as well. The pumps, hoses and brackets are. The undercar parts should be the same.

The undercar stuff sells for $300+ as cores to rebuilders or on ebay. If you can snag some yblock power steering pumps and the crank pulleys, those are worth some good beans.

For FE, the pumps should be the same 58-9.

I think 60 is different again. Mercury of the same years and some Edsel are also different.

Tell him you will buy all of it, even the extras, and you can sell off the stuff you don't use.

There is a place in Orange County, Ca that rebuilds the stuff fairly reasonably. I'll try to find the info.

I have a 1958 Ford with stock power steering. I had it rebuilt by a shop in Orange County, which may be the one referred to above. The shop is Weatherly Classique Cars and the guy I dealt with is Bryan Weatherly, his e-mail is b2xu@cox.net. I found two phone numbers online, 714-871-3750 and 714-525-9477. Not sure which one is right. The address is

That's a great deal. I sold a complete setup but without the special dual groove crank pulley on eBay a couple years ago for $300, saw a setup sell for almost three times that just recently. If he can get you the whole setup for 225, even if you have to go through everything, that's a good price. You'll feel better with new hoses and a rebuilt cylinder anyway.

'59 Edsel power steering is the same as the Ford setup, you could buy a parts car with PS and pull that off if you were so inclined. And then you could send me some trim parts off of your new Edsel parts car because I'm such a swell guy. Just throwin' it out there.

Yep, $225 seems like a good deal - I'd jump on it!

As stated already, you can buy everything you need to rebuild that PS system, from a few different catalogs. Some searching/comparing will save you some money. Napa also carries some of the rebuild parts. I checked, and www.rockauto.com has some of the parts, too - their prices are usually very competitive, if not cheaper....

9. OK, one more Q about this PS deal. All the underneath stuff (linkages, control valve, slave cylinder, ect) will be off a 57-58 Ford. The pump and brackets will be off a 59 352. Will this combo work? The 57 & 58 had Y-blocks, the 59 has a 352 like mine.

10. 225$ is a great deal, have seen similar go as high as $800.00 complete with everything pulleys etc, on ebay or $1500 if rebuilt,

Yes the 59 352 pump and brackets will work with the 57/ 58 lower no problems,

we just did one of the "bolt in" PS boxes, I need to find out who it came from.

We added an extra mount welded to the top of the frame, and had to use their modified center link.

I dont have shots of the center link, but they shorten it and thread it.

You can see where we had to notch the top of the frame, and with this setup it will be difficult to run column shift (we are on an aftermarket column). Also once you buy the box, pitman arm, "tierod kit" and have them modify a center link, it gets rather expensive.

13. Gregg, when you find out, let me know what company supplied that "bolt on" box. Thanks.

15. I was afraid of that. I've heard a lot of negative stuff about the product. It didn't exactly bolt on, but you have very capably made it work; your next surprise may come when you road test it. I've heard of everything from wandering to steering lock-up. I'll try to find links to the discussions I've read and post them.

any info you have would be great.

Initially the product seemed nice. We ordered the complete kit, and quickly were disappointed with the quality of instructions. It took a bit more work to mount the box than their limited instructions said, there was no way to put their "tierod kit" onto the centerlink. There was NOTHING in the instructions about it. After calling they said that they offered one already modified, I have NO idea how they ever chucked it up in a lathe to thread the end. We had to pay for the new centerlink, even though it is listed as part of their kit. Hooking up column shift will be slightly more difficult than a tri five chevy with a 605 box. We have had to make a box to recess the shift arm into the firewall.

That is where we are now, it will be a while till the car is on the road, we will see how it turns out.

Stay away from Gear Venders. I put one in a customers 60 Starliner last year, I love how they advertise "bolt in". Since when does bolt in involve a torch and welder? After a day and a half of bolting it in it drives like an old worn out box, not what we wanted for $1500 + labor

Is the 57-59 steering box like the 55-56 box? If it is you might look into using a late 90's Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box, I read that this box can used on the 55-56 Ford with some modification. I may pick one up at my local salvage yard and see if it will fit in my 55. Mark
