I'm driving from Milwaukee to Toronto on Monday and Tuesday next week. By myself in my daily driver, no schedule. Probably crossing back at Detroit/Sarnia, but I might take the southern route through Cleveland and cross at Buffalo. What's worth checking out along the way? Car museums? Good burger joints? Cool roadside attractions?
there is a car museum in Michigan City, IN thats supposed to be decent. Redamack's in New Buffalo MI for a Burger, also a killer Antique store Gas & Oil Related, tons of Pricey Pumps & Signs, cool to look. Right over the IN border on 94. Exit at the 1st Wine Outlet.
Hey Andrew, drop by my joint if you have the time. Close to I-94, 30 miles south of the WI-IL border. Drop a PM if you want directions.
Just glanced at a map Mike, looks like I'll be driving right past your place Monday morningish. I'll shoot ya a PM.
That's it? Mike's a nice guy and all , but there's gotta be more to see between Milwaukee and Detroit than Casa Zenor. All the GMBs thrashing for the Cinematic or something? I've got Frank Lloyd Wright's studio and the Henry Ford Museum on my list already.
In Milwaukee, have a burger and frozen custard at Kopp's (by I-43 and Silver Spring Drive). Not really car related just really good! Coming south you'll be passing close to Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove WI, one of the longest continually operating tracks in the nation. Chicago - there's your typical touristy areas off Michigan Ave. I might suggest the Museum of Science and Industry for some great mechanical displays. Be sure to sample the holy trifecta of local cuisine - deep dish pizza, Italian beef sandwich, and of course the Chicago style hot dog with all the fixin's but NO CATSUP !!! Detroit - shame on you if you don't go to the Henry Ford Museum and Walter P. Chrysler Auto Museum. Be sure to come into Detroit armed/concealled.
A few options Kalamazoo: Air Zoo - Air museum - www.airzoo.org Gilmore Museum - www.gilmorecarmuseum.org Ypsilanti: Hudson Museum - www.ypsiautoheritage.org RM auction showroom, just a block or two away from the Hudson museum on Forest Ave. From the West - Travel East on I-94 to exit 183 (Huron Street) - Turn left on Huron Street (approx. 1.5 miles to Forest) - Turn right on Forest Avenue - RM is on your Right Across the street from the Hudson Museum is a resterant called Sidetrack....great burgers. Aubreys on the other side of the street is good too. Dearborn: Henry Ford / Greenfield Village...plan on the entire day. - www.hfmgv.org Auburn Hills: Chrysler Museum - www.chryslerheritage.com
If you want, feel free to PM me and you could stop by....maybe have a beer or two??? I got a pretty cool chopped shoebox that does bad ass burnout!!!! maybe we could to a few, but them tires are almost gone, so maybe only one or two.....
See, now that's what I'm talking about! I love the HAMB. Thanks for the info. Jeff, you've still got that rusty pile in your driveway? I figured you'd have sold it for scrap by now. Those tires were getting old anyway, hell I bought them almost 2 months ago. See ya tomorrow man, I'm getting pumped.
wingnutz, yeah I was thinking about that, but there are some things I'd like to see along the way. Django, I've got your info with me, I might drop in, thanks. Time to hit the road...
I've got two options for you:A.) Cross back at Port Huron, go west to Flint and check out the Sloan Museum (http://sloanmuseum.com/), also the building GM was founded in (carriage town) then on to Lansing to the Olds Museum (http://reoldsmuseum.org/) down to 94 and back towards Chicago, -OR- B.) cross back at the Port Huron / Sarnia border, check out the train depot under the bridge (Thomas Edison Historical place), watch for freighters passing through the river, then catch Main Street to the south -turns into M29 highway. Take M29 south to Marine City Michigan - most of the drive follows the St. Mary's river -looks like the Mississippi in places. From Marine city go west and catch I-94. In Detroit, the T-plex -first Ford Property & home of the Model T will be closed (http://www.tplex.org/), but I'd consider checking out Milwaukee Junction. My girlfriends studio is in the old Murray building - home to Lebaron and others as well (http://www.ricdetroit.org/) right across the way. She pinstripes too!. Bring you camera -great photo oppurtunities. Most all of this stuff is right off I-94, and pretty safe area's too -watch the pot holes. Continue on to the Henry Ford. After Henry Ford, there's the Oldest Hudson Dealer in America in Ypsilanti (http://www.ypsiautoheritage.org/). Hope this helps, sorry it's so long winded. If you (or anybody else) needs info about Detroit specifically, let me know, I know of some pretty obscure stuff around here. I would reccomend the T-plex to anyone any time- It's almost a religious experience!
If you go to Milwaukee (actually pronounced MILL-E-WAH-KAY)you have to visit these guys that make beer, Miller I think is the name. You also have to sing the Laverne and Shirley theme song.
Look up the old posts I have started. There will be one of a list of Museums, you can see if any are along the route. There is some in Auburn, IN off I69.
hay if you decide to go to the r&m or hudon places in ypsi (by 94 and exit 183) give me a call as i am just a mile or so from them both and wouldnt mind meeting up with ya
Just a note, It's Detroit/Windsor and Port Huron/Sarnia. I would go through Port Huron/Sarnia. Shorter wait times from what I've seen and nicer too, haha. Norton
Milwaukees Harley Davidson museum doesn't open till July 12th I think. Road construction is open on I 94 in Kenosha.
When you're in Toronto, be sure to hit Allen's pub on Danforth. The food's great & they have 120 different kinds of scotch on the shelf & 200 different microbrews beers in the cooler! They also own the Irish pub next door! Swerve carefully!
Yeah, two bridges now and way cooler border patrol guards. Cheaper tolls too, haha. When you're near Cambridge give me a shout. 1-519-212-1044 Norton
