Coming soon to the UK - computer-enforced speed limits

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Zenor, Jul 2, 2004.

  1. Orwell was right. From yesterday's Times of London --

The Government is to establish a national speed limits database that will pave the way for all cars to be fitted with devices that prevent speeding.

The digital speed map of Britain is an essential first step towards introducing Intelligent Speed Adaptation, known as ISA, which automatically applies the brakes or blocks acceleration.

An on-board computer linked to a satellite positioning system will use the digital map to identify the local speed limit. If drivers attempt to exceed the limit, they hear a series of bleeps and the accelerator pedal starts vibrating.

The device will be offered initially as an optional extra by car manufacturers but ministers have not ruled out eventually making some version of the system compulsory.

That HAS to be all talk. I wonder how the government would make up for all of that lost revenue? No speeders = No tickets.

  3. News Flash! We already have it here.
Several of the rental car companies now have a system whereby if the car you rent exceeds the speed limit for a specified amount of time, the device automatically deducts a certain amount of money from your credit card in lieu of a speeding fine!
I read several months ago where a man was suing National(I think)Rent a car because he got a 1400 dollar surcharge on his credit card and when he questioned it,the rental company told him it was for exceeding the speed limit and to read the fine print in his rental agreement.
    THE ORWELL HAS LANDED!

Control, is the goal. Revenue is secondary. Would be a 'drag' if you were trying to reach hospital and 'the eye in the sky' hindered your speed. Just WHO are these lawmaker's? They have name's, but a clear conscience is not required. Time for some Orwell refresher course's.

  7. You are correct Tomslik. Fmr. Senator Bill Janklow was convicted of killing a biker partially because of the OBD telemtry. This **** is getting scary and I am not a paranoid person. [IMG]

Grimlok nailed it, they earn way too much from speeding fines to ever introduce something like this..

Using the same technology to catch you speeding ( and then fine you ) is far more likely..

Lost revenue would be made up by introducing another tax to compensate for the shortfall in speeding fines.tax raising is the ONLY thing this government has got any idea how to do.
It beats me why the ****`eads who screw about with computer viruses never hit on the big brother stuff and do us all a favour.

Is it right that all new mobile phones in the US are going to have gps built into them so as they know exactly where you are at any time the phones on?
