I took my 47 to summer set today and on the way back we hit a big rain storm. I ended up getting water in the distributor cap. It is a Mallory Unilite and when I got home I looked at the cap and say there is about a .080" hole on the side. Should this be there?
Also what is a good way to seal the cap from getting moisture in when you are driving in the rain?

the hole probably is for breathing, but is their a screen in the base of your distributor????

if so it might be plugged not allowing moisture out, my little wrecker has a hei distributor and it oc***ionaly gets clogged up so moisture collect and have to clean out once in a while

Dont know for sure about your cap . Had a Unilite dist. in a drag car one time, started the car and forgot the battery charger was hooked on the battery. Dont ask what happened. Wasn't anything that money didnt fix.

I do think automotive caps have a breather hole to help them dry themselves out. Marine caps are not vented. Read this somewhere, either Mallory or MSD site.

Back in my VW racing days, we use to spray the dist. down with hairspray to keep the moisture out, on the off-road motors. There are rubber boots available also, check the off-road sites.

Throw a womens elastic shower cap under the seat. Depending on how your wires are run even a Zip lock bag can work in a pinch. If you want to run with no hood, which I do, you may want to rout your wires in a way that allows emergency rain coats. Who cares what it looks like at 60 MPH in the rain as long as you get home.
