need a little advice please. i just got my engine back from the builder and he rattel canned it. he forgot that i wanted it left un-painted. i have removed all the paint with paint stripper, been around it several times with acetone and brake cleaner. i will use some wax and degreaser on it as well. i will put two light coats of PPG 2 part etch prime on it. question-do i need too 2-k prime it, or can i go straight to sealer, base coat, and clear? the reason i want to skip the 2 k prime is so i wont have to scuff in all the nooks and crannys. somebody said i could etch prime, then go straight to sealer. thanks, pkj
go straight to sealer then paint. -- i sprayed a engine for a friend of mines stock car. for no reason i used urethane single stage with nothing underneath it (he just wanted it spray painted) i did that engine 5-6 years ago & the block sets in his garage now & the paint is still hanging on it & looks good.
I would use epoxy like DP instead of etch. Spray your last coat slightly over reduced and it will act as a sealer. Then go straight to base.
Hey, Something to think over....... Engines 'heat cycle' many , many times. Thick layers of finish i.e. etch primer, epoxy, sealer. base & clear coats, all add up. Unlike body panels, the very least amount of material you can 'get away- with' the better! Unless this is a show car, with little hard road time in its' future, a piss coat of base and clear at best. Anything sprayed on thick will, over time crack and peel. S****ey Devils C.C. "Meanwhile, back on board The Tainted Pork"
Etch is fine for an engine, and you don't need sealer over it, just shoot the paint. Just be sure to use a good paint for a long lasting job.....Imron, SIngle Stage Uro, Centari w/hardener, or BC/CC. The cast iron parts really don't even need primer (the sheet metal parts do), but it does come out better if you do use it.
When you paint the final colour go heavy on the hardener I did a motor for a friend in a colour to match his car .put about 40 -50% hardener with the paint .It never dis coloured ,looked great for many years till he sold it.
Don't go nuts with primer thickness for the cracking/heat cycle reasons mentioned above. Tint the primer close to finished color, some engine designs like pontiacs will always burn one or two spots, and you want to minimize the primer's color shift at the edge of the inevitable burn.
Which etch prime? Vinyl wash primer (etch) needs to be sealed or primed before paint. Mild etch primer sometimes does need to be sealed and some paints can go right on it with out sealer and primer.
