I am having a problem with the battery going dead on my 64 wagon. The alternator gets hot when you try and charge the battery and it will take forever to charge unless the battery is disconnected, once hooked back up the alternator will get warm and the batt will go dead in about 10-12 hours. I had the alt checked and they said it was okay (checked at a rebuilders, not at auto zone) my first guess was a bad diode in the alternator. They also checked my voltage reg and told me it was bad so they gave me a replacement since it was only a few months old. the car still ahs the same problem and the alterantor guy says its probably another bad reg (not the first time I have had new parts that were bad) Does anyone know how to check for the reg leaving the field open on the alt ? The alternator guy says the warm alt leads him to believe the field is being left open by the reg. I have a 61-64 shop manual but the troubleshooting is weak. Thanks Scott
Break out the test light. Disconnect the V/R plug at the alt ,ground one end of the test light and touch the other to the field terminal in the plug. The light lights you are putting power through the V/R to the alt. While you are at it pull the output wire off the alt and hook up the test light between the wire and terminal, it lights you got diode problems.
