I painted the "parking light" bulb in my stock Model A headlights orange and rewired the headlights. Works nicely, even on a 6V system.

I still use hand signals though because people are stupid.
I had a woman tailgating me the other day with her cell phone out taking pictures!

On my Model A Coupe it was easy. I bought a set of converted 1930 cowl lamps. So I have park lights and blinkers. 50 Pontiac on the rears, wired with blinkers. I still use my arm.

Have owned Harleys with out turn signals for so many years , that when i got my 97 new in 97 it had turn signals on it..I never use them..hand signals do get peoples attention.
It amazes me as to how many people dont know their hand signals.

I probably will not have Turn signals on my A..it didnt come with em..
solves the wiring issue too..and when they dont look right they just look like ass..
Im for keeping it clean., guess unless i find something that really works well with the looks of the car. it will be without.

I didn't want turnsignals on my car but decided from a safety stand point I should because as posted earlier lots of people today don't have a clue as to what an arm signal means. Trying to make my signals invisible when not turned on, I used these Harley/ Kryakan(sp?) lights on my full fendered car. I don't think they would look appropriate on a hiboy though. I decided to use these B-31 AC-Guide lights for signals on my hiboy coupe. They were an accessory back up light on GM cars in the late 40's. Keys are shown for size . I would prefer to use vintage Allis Chalmers tractor tail lights if some one can tell me how to make a red glass lens clear or what lens to put into them.

As mentioned in a previous thread on here, someone smarter than me had the idea of using your high beam to flash for a turn. Think about it, who has their high beams on when signalling anyway?

Bloody brilliant if you ask me!

WADDA YA MEAN ?? In California they dont even OFFER Driver Ed Classes in High School any more.

You have to PAY a private company for the Shitty job they provide.

It Really shows in the driving habits of the general population of drivers here in Ca. ... REALLY shows in the Big Citys.

That was going to be my exact smart assed answer. Glad someone got it out there. My 59 truck didn't even have them so ....

Think of it on the positive side...one less thing to fail inspection.

That's all funny but I want to give that cell phone toting soccer mom something to catch her attention. I don't care if I'm legal or in the right. I don't want to be ass ended if I can do anything to prevent it.

hey tommy maybe what we need is an articulating arm..that we can control and is long enough to smack that person if they arent paying attention..than signal.
maybe the ability to send that cell phone to the foor of the car would be enough to get their attention as we make our perfectly legal turn with their undevided attention...

the above stament was made for sarcastic purposes..no socker moms were harmed or mamed in the process of this manuver.

Personaly, I like the turn signal inside the headlight deal. It's barely noticeable and it works great.

heheh thanks for the input guys. i'm considering the arm.

see i live in cupertino/san jose area, which for the most part is subjecting your car to hell. you come out to the parking lot and there's a brand new lexus SUV parking a literal 2 inches from your door and theyve got 2 feet on the other side. so front blinkers might be an investment.

i was thinking about hollowing out a set of amber reflectors, (the ones that look like blue dots) and running a little bulb behind em. or idk, i think semaphores would be pretty cool :D

Not sure if anyone has suggested this but what about the headlights that have the signals built into them. You can't really seem them until you use your signals. Nice and clean looking.

  19. Been mentioned.

Best bet is to look through the old mags - most cars just didn't have 'em then.

Today I think you want them because thats what most people understand. In the rear, a dual-filament bulb does it. Up front, any small vintage light you like will work - truck marker lights might be an option. Some of the fancier ones have a curved housing that might fit on the top of a headlight bucket pretty well.

About 5 years ago, I was driving my 40 Ford to a cruise in down in Georgia and was hit in the rear end ... by a guy driving a Chevy pickup. I was slowing down to turn right and had my arm out giving a right signal. He plowed in to the rear of the coupe. :(

When the POLICE got there, he said my brake lights were not working ... but the POLICE checked and the one that had not been destroyed ... was working great. Then he said I had no turn signals. They seemed NOT too happy about that ... until I told the Police that turn signals were not required on 1940 Fords but that I had my arm out ... with a hand signal. Things still did not look all that promising until a witness stepped up and told the POLICE ... I was following the OLD GUY in the Old Car ... and he had his arm out the window ... making a right turn.
Then the POLICE wrote the LOCAL guy up ... failure to yield and following too close.

Both of my current old cars have rear turn signals ...
MUCH SAFER ... In my Humble Opinion .

Depending on the head lites you are using, you can configure turn signal lites inside your existing head lites

I've got a set of Willys Overland Whippet Drum Head Lights I'm using on my '29 Pontiac RPU, The backs of the lights were rusted pretty bad and I was at a swap meet about a week ago and found some pretty cool small 30's or 40's lights that had arrows on them, kind of a mini drum light, I'm going to fab them into the sides. Should be different, and cool.

Been mentioned, but here's a picture of the stock Model A lights with the parking light converted to turn signal (yellow bulb). Clean, highly effective and just a matter of a little wiring. I converted the lamps to 12V HEI and am running both hi/lo beams all the time. Everybody sell's the kit for around $30. The car passed VA State Inspection no problem.

Sorry , but those are just wrong .....

I used some old English wing mounted seperate side lights on mine , they were used on loads of old Austins , Morrises etc and look at home mounted on the rail....they are fairly common here at swapmeets etc....

Please go looking for stuff like that if you can ......it's worth the effort.
Have you looked at vintage m/cycle or bicycle stuff that could be adapted ?
Tractors have cool lights too including wing mounted side lights ....

Don't know your application but I always thought semaphores would be cool on a hot rod OR custom. Look to old british cars. Better yet, I think new semaphore kits are available in the VW aftermarket. You probably build the receptacle box and the kit includes the wiring and the semaphore (arm with integral signal), and the hinge mechanism.

semaphores would be cool...the only problem I see with this is..If the blind driver cant see your hand, they sure as hell aint going to notice a semaphore..
and arnt semaphores a bitch to hook up and keep in good working order?
im still for the hand signals on a trad. rod..but if forced to do the blinking light deal, it will be something that flows with the build..not against the grain.

Any one using handsignals up my way at night is liable to end up like a luna moth on the grill of a semi. Okay for daytime driving, assuming the A-hole behind you knows what a hand signal is, but for night driving it can be a bummer. Odds are you won't be seen until your ass end has already been introduced to the front bumper of the vehicle behind you.

You can get them at any Streetrod show for about $10 a piece in red or amber. Good for anything except traditional built vehicles. I use them on my garden tractor. :D

There are a lot of ways to incorporate turnsignals in a vehicle, some to the extent that no one will even see them until they are lit. I even like the cowl lamps that have been converted to turnsignals. Old parts, new function.
