Hi, I'm currently ordering tons of parts for my 52 chevy, its gonna have fatman ultra low IFS, air lift kit, 4 bar rear end, and sbc. As I want the rockers to be aligned with the bottom of the frame rails, the car has to be slightly channeled (2"), I plan to make a custom K-member to allow the rails to touch the ground when aired down. I was going for the Walton fab brake booster (firewall mounted), but the tricky thing is I'd like to be sure that there would be enough space to fit the brake booster next to the left valve cover ! As the engine expected to be higher than stock, the body a little lower, I cant figure out whether that would make it, or not. There are tons of 49-52 chevy guys here running real low, what brake MC setup do you all use ?? There are other options such as a floor mount MC, but actually I cant see exactly how that would fit, as the car will be ultra low when aired down, that would be the first thing to hit the road... BTW it seems that Walton mounted the booster on the firewall...in order to avoid that kind of problem. Maybe someone here has already found a solution ?
Looks like it would be a ***** to would fill the MC with brake fluid Edit: Guess I should have read first, you can have remote fill
...i went through the fillingstation.com and sent in my original MC and they adapted a dual unit to the original. it stays in the same spot as the original and they set it up for disc front drum rear. it's a cool little set up and i don't have to put anything on the firewall. -marty
i have replied to threads like this before, but don't get alot of positive remarks, anyway, here goes again. mico. this company makes mc that are as small as a mustang fruit jar type , but are powerbrake cylinders. the one i used is a single type and does it stop my car. frank oddo back in the "70's did this article on them and they became the latest thing. the dual type started getting all the press and everybody started running around crying the single was an accident waiting to happen, so they lost favor. i myself in 45 years of fooling with cars have never had a brake failure with a single mc. if it's built right and it's maintained right, what's going to happen? anyway, contact them and get some literature from them. if your interested in the article , i can email it to you. http://www.mico.com/products/images/34_docfile.pdf
I used a modified 82-92 Camaro master cylinder and booster firewall mounted. It works very well and saves a lot of money. Chevytalk.org has an article on it.
I was going to say Camaro. I run a swapmeet special booster, like the one watson offers, I don't know what it is, but it's about the same size. I have the Walton pedal setup, and so I can tell you that even with an engine that sits way up in the doghouse, you should have no clearance issues.
My 52 sedan stopped just fine with manual brakes. I do recommend the dual-reservoir type (mine was from a 72 Mustang). I had it under the floor for a while and then moved it to the firewall. I have no plans for power brakes on the fastback I'm building right now.
disc conversion w/ manual ie no booster has stopped me w/ no issues for 3 plus years now and I did the same as Slide and went with and also "...recommend the dual-reservoir type" mine was from a Pinto btw: I found out the ECI makes most of the kits that all the other places such as MP brake sell http://ecihotrodbrakes.com/
i'm running a non-power under floor aftermarket unit using a corvette master cylinder. disc brakes up front, it stops well without boost.
in my 52, I'm running the booster/mc along with a modified swing arm/pedal that came from the donor mid 70's Camaro that I also got my front subframe from. Plenty of clearance even with the wide big block Caddy engine. Bob
our 51 is dropped 4 inches over the stock frame ( S-10 front clip ). The engine is set back 10 inches, the firewall has been moved back 9 inches, mid 80s Cadillac booster ( for 4 wheel disc brakes ). As said many times, a picture is worth a thousand words
Just throwing it out there, but the booster I took off a full size '64 Pontiac was not that big, I don't think much bigger than the 80s Camaro/Firebird unit. I was kind of surprised, and when I get a chance I'm going to put the two side by side to compare. With mine, I got an NOS stocker, messed with it, it had some rust inside and still sticks, I finally got pissed off, took the pedal mount out of a '55 Chevy, and I just got a good used 68 Skylark master cylinder to use to mock it up with. If you can't find a 55-57 Chevy pedal mount, a 58-60 isn't much different, I have one out and can post some pictures if anyone needs. I even took one out of a '64 Pontiac - it bolts in a little different, but the wide automatic trans pedal pad unbolts from the arm to leave a little pad the same size and shape as the stock Chevy. (I figured I'd better start saving parts like that so that should I need one again I'll have it).
I used a '73 Nova pedal ***y. in my '51. You have to trim a little, but it fits good, and is very strong. Use a m.c. of your choice on the firewall. There is a lot of room for engine clearance. Good luck....Ole Pork
hey, look up some i my threads, i just nudded my 54' without channeling! as i found there are "other ways". saved me a lot of time. and DONT buy any kmembers if ur going to lay rockers, you'll just end up modifying it anyways..i just scratch built mine and didnt even have to cut the floor.. oh, and im gonna use the underdash kit as well, with the remote fill, why not! keep the firewal clean imo
