What kind of options are there for transmissions to Y-blocks? Got a customer that has a 292/ 3 spd. combo in a 56 Ford pickup and he wants to swap in a C4 or a 5 spd. if it is simple enough. Any ideas?
With a C4 or AOD you'll need an adapter kit. Flat-O sells them, as well as WilCap. Look to spend $450-550 for Flat-O's plus the price of a new starter for the kit to work. Wilcap can do any trans even GM's. Dunno about a T-5, but it's been done, I just never looked into that option. I have an adapter to run a Muncie behind a Y, I might use it, I might not, it's worth too much money, so I dunno. He could also get an overdrive tail section for that 3-spd, or an early 4-spd trans to bolt right up to it.
The easiest way is a early Ford toploader or T-10 with the dual bolt patterns, it'll bolt right up to the Y-block bellhousing, clutch thats in it now will work also. I have one of the t-10s if your interested PM me.
