Looks like I may be going to Japan on business in early August. I get into Tokyo (Roppongi area) on a Sunday afternoon, free on Monday till 2pm, and a little time on Tuesday. It all adds up to just small bits of free time here and there, but I want to see some cool stuff while I can-- Hot Rod related is a bonus! I thought about Mooneyes in Yokohama, but that could eat up a whole day just trying to get there and back.
Also- I'll be down in Hiroshima for another 4 days, so any suggestions for things to see & do there as well.

    What would you go see?

    Fire away!

    Jive Bomber...

It's kitchy, but the Hard Rock Cafe (in the Roppongi) has King Kong clininging to the side of the building...and the Roppongi has bi lingual street signs....English and Kanji...left over from the post-war occupation (and thanks to Douglas McArthur).

    Just some interesting cultural anthropology.

I have a buddy over there teaching English to youngsters and having the time of his life. He sends e-mail updates every couple weeks, here are some excerpts:

monday may 5th, take ferry to miyajima island (floating red gate called torii, one of the three best views of japan) climb a mountain, pet wild deer and see red ***ed baboons

tuesday may 6th, check out traditional japanese dancers at osaka castle

wednesday may 7th, nana (friend from uni) visits us at Nara (great temples and more pettable wild deer) followed by teaching the japanese girls (yoko and nana) to shotgun beers

thursday may 8th, amy and I hit up Himeji-jo (best example of Edo period Samurai Castles)

saturday may 10th, Edo Wonderland (17th to 19th century village/amusment park) where I saw ninja plays and other cool stuff, won a blowgun compe***ion (small dangling trash for my cell phone) and then played the part of the Vice-Shogun in a Myko play (myko were geisha in training) where I got to speak in japanese (mainly laughing) and drink sake on stage, Now That's Theatre!!!!!

Sunday May 11th...... I finally got to see Sumo after all of these years, and you know what, IT ROCKS...KoTooshu (bulgarian sumo wrestler, very good) won his bout and the number one wrestler in the world for the last 5 years was upset in his first match by a low level japanese wrestler (he is from ****olia) which lead to everyone throwing their seat cushions at him. I was there for 6 hours and you can bring your own beer...........It Was by far the best.

  11. Is Nash Yoshi from Burnout still around the HAMB? There used to be a few Japanese HAMBers.

    J-B,
I spent 3 years there in the Navy very near Tokyo, but back in the mid-80's and before my interest in hot rods. Roppongi is THE party district. Depending on your flight's length and how tired you are, having some fun walking around there with the CEO first might be a good idea. There are 8 story bldgs with bars on every level. From punk to rock to disco to C&W to rock-a-billy to blues and jazz. What ever you want.
Yokohama isn't that far from where you will be. But is it worth the trouble to ride the trains down just to see another speed shop? If so, see the R&C magazine October 02 issue. You might be able to contact the author and get some points of contact from him.
If you get there early enough on Sunday, you could also go to the Meiji Shrine to stretch your airliner legs (big building, big br*** bell, incense, lots of folks in traditional clothing, yada, yada) because it is in Yoyogi Park (no, Yogi the bear and friends do not live there). On the weekend, the park is filled with crazy dancers, punkers and others who dance and "vogue" to boom boxes. Lots of ELL-Vi and rock and roll and the funniest **** you have ever seen.
    Stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO-aoG8NEOw
Have fun. Some day, after I hit the lottery, I'm taking my hot rod there and touring the country again. Last time I did it on a motorcycle! Later, Gary

  14. If you happen to be flying there in a B-29 I know the best thing you could do.
And I dont give a **** what anyone thinks of that. Remember Sandakan, Changi, Burma-Thailand Railway and any number of other Jap atrocity's.

If you do any island hopping or your schedule allows, swing by Okinawa. Everything there is dirt cheap...china, gold, jade, etc. Island was transferred back to Japan a while back and the economy is gone since it was mostly USA Bases, bars and women.

I'd see how much a trip to okinawa would be, then I'd take in the place and remember all the WWII Marine Corps vets who are still a**** us, and those gave their lives so that I might have the blessing to live in freedom. Of course, its just me, but i'd try my darndest to puddle jump over to Siapan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and Guadalc****,....though that would take a few days I suppose.

    Well, enjoy!!

  20. I always get a kick out of the electronic section of Tokyo, they have stuff there you will see here in the states maybe 5 years from now.
Also the Sumo wrestling area is pretty cool and if you get a chance check out some actual Sumo wrestling, do it, it's a trip.
Don't waste your time going to the Mooneyes store, it's hard to find, tiny and there is nothing there we don't have here.
One day is really short, just getting from Narita (Airport) to Tokyo is time consuming.
    This you cant miss either:D:D:D

You need to get out from under that rock more often fella...
And a Yugo? You realize the last part of that is "slavia", which is about as Japanese as gulash!

Jive Talker, hit me with an e-mail and I'll set you up...or set you straight, whichever works best!

There is a bar in Roppongi called Motown, where everything is not as it seems. A bunch of us ended up there one night with some of our Japanese coworkers when one of our Americans who had consumed a few adult beverages became the focus of attention for one of the young "ladies" in the bar.

A few of us tried to warn him but, he would not listen. Lets just say that he got the surprise of his life. Guess you could say it was Hot Rod related just not the kind you are talking about. He has never lived that one down. We give him hell about it every chance we get.

Every damned sushi, yakatori, and noodles place I could find and then proceed to eat the **** out of the place with some Kirin Ichiban to wash it all down. Then go to the little Bar in Fuchu City I know of for "special meeting" with some old friends for some sake, suntori, and more biru.

If you don't know anyone I guess you could try and track down a guy by the name of Kenji Okazaki to see the most in american cars stashed over there. MoonEyes folks.

Or I would go eat some more and think about it.

We have a HAMB person or two stashed over there on special ***ignment as well do we not?

    English Japanese
    hello (good morning) ohayoo gozaimasu
    hello (good evening) konban wa
    hello (good afternoon) konnichi wa
hello (on the phone) moshi moshi
hello (said at the front door to see if anyone is home) gomen kudasai

My nickname when I was traveling over there was Godzilla because I damn near destroyed every companies budget financially when ate. I love that place.

Due repsect for all of the people and customs and you will be treated very, very, well.

Parting shots from my very good friend real loud at the Narita airport in both engrish and Japanese.
Domo Arrigato! Yankee finarry go home! Sayonara roun eye sum*****! Smiles, winks, laughs and runs off.

I guess that paid me back for sending him a picture of about 10 Texans dressed like Japanese tourists Texas style from a Halloween party.
