No I see no need in a panard bar in the rear because the spring and shackles act like a panard bar and with the sway bar the car does not lean or sway so the shackles keep the rear centered. Bruce
I could not afford the jacket and hat so i had Scroggins-Dickey Chevrolet put me one together. What rear end ratio are you running and what percentage of overdrive and how tall are your rear tires Bruce
Nope, that's not correct. With the rear shackles and a non-wishbone rear suspension, it's going to move side to side. Sam.
the wishbone has nothing to do with it.all the wishbone does is to support the rear end on the torque tube.you remove the spring from a stock rear end,and that rear end will move as far as the frame will let it.it is the tension of the spring on the shackles that keeps the rearend centered.from 1903-1946,ford didn't run a panhard rod on the rear end of their cars.only after they softened the springs and made the shackles longer, that they started needing a panhard rod. we have several cars on the road, with ALOT of miles on them, that have this same setup.and it IS experience, not a little voice, telling me this. -danny
in your opinion, what would you run? if you say steelies and firestones,we'll come to you house and put the smack down on you. if you are building a late 60's era hot rod, these wheels are it.but,if it keeps you up at night,we have several sets of wheels to choose from. i'm sure that you will hate them too. -danny
What kind of joker doesn't like Halibrands? You two always posting pics of beautiful '32 chassis. It's getting boring.
My roadster has a 3.25 with 28.5 tall tires and I cannot get past 17 - 18 MPG ... @ 70 to 75 MPH. I know that the full " not chopped " windshield and the stock original fenders hurt it some " in the wind resistance " and MPG might suffer a litle. I changed carbs, different jetting, a different advance can on the HEI ... all the usual tuning tricks without much difference. I tried a 3.00 gear and a 3.50 gear with only very minor differences. I think with a OD transmission ( I have a Turbo 400 in the roadster ) I could do a little better because I know that Turbo 400's have a good bit of parasitic drag built in. I had a ZZZ 350/345 HP crate engine it the roadster for years and I could get it up to the low 20's in fuel mileage ... but I guess the extra 85 HP needs FUEL ... and costs me the 4 mpg or so ... I guess. The 3W ... has a 700R4 but I have not had it out on a highway trip ... hopefully it will do better MPG . If gas goes to 5 or 6 dollars a gallon I have a nice, low miles stock 305 Vortec engine that can go into the 3W ... cause I am GOING TO DRIVE IT ... I agree with the KID ... and I will be by in the next few days to get those awful wheels ... for my 32 Roadster
I have 3.70 rear end gears, .64 5th gear in the tremec, and rear tires are 31.72 inches tall. This is in a deuce roadster highboy with a chopped, raked-back so-cal windshield. The holley that came ith the ZZ430 has been re-jetted and the advance in the HEI has been changed. I had the motor dyno'd, tuned and broke-in at Sallee Chev. Dropped in the car and left on a 2,500 mile trip. I have been really happy with this motor.
I'm guessing the "period" Bruce is shooting for is NOW. A high quality build with truck loads of style built to log some serious miles. If you can knock this car, I'd sure like to see what's in your garage. JH
I am using a Gold Trac. what ever that is .I had a guy install it for me. I just sent off some 40 bells and a dif. to you for you to machine for us. Bruce
Harrison you got it right I have tried to to do somethings different than my other cars, I have my full fendered roadster with full tilt flathead ,39 box ,3.54 rear end ,that i have driven all over the u.s. and thats fun ,I have the 32 roadster pickup that i drive ,but I have never had a real 32roadster built for me the way that I like. This roadster is going to be to nice for me but it will be what i want in a car. I am not sure about the color but i wanted something different that that would go with the mag color wheels and rear end. The headlight will be 32 truck the car will have criuse control for the long trips to Calif. will have swinging pedals and 3 master cylinders behind the dash for floor space and to keep out the heat, it will have a heater for those trips to the mountains and i have a set of 16/7 narrow Halibrands for the rear if i want to change . the front hubs and the rear axles have 3 set of bolt patterns in them so i can use wheels and tires that we have. So now to keep putting together it together. Randy I want to come over to your area and go to that trip that you Guys take to the mountains I think thats in May, is it to South Carolina for 32 only. I just want the JUNK to work for me , but everbody wants people to like their cars, We build cars for a living and have the best of customers that require we build the best that we can and most of the time they are cars that most people like me can not afford. Bruce
Anyone who has issues with what you've done here whether it be the look of the engine or the type of wheels should be flogged to an inch of their lives and then subjected to some HARSH treatment.. Seriously, this is one of the nicest chassis I've seen in quite awhile. But, what are we to expect when you post the stuff that's coming out of your shop, it's all top notch. Now, you've got to keep us posted on the rest of this build. I, for one, can't wait. Frank
I wasn't "knocking" anything. It's just that everything but the look of the engine screams 60's hot rod to me. The engine looks like it was pulled out of one of those muscle cars with the 20" wheels on them. Paint the aluminum heads, throw on some finned valve covers, and get an old corvette air cleaner, and I think it will fit in with everything else on the car. BTW, I don't think you want to look in my garage. There's nothing in there but a blown apart flathead, 3-speed transmission, '36 rear end, and a bunch of junk!
I love everything about this chassis, the color, the detail, everything. This will be one damn good looking car. Oh on a personal note, I wish american racing would bring back the bear claws, even if it were a limited run. I love those wheels.
I would expect nothing LESS from the fellows at that Hot Rod Shop in Spring, Texas. Great looking car Bruce, It won't be yours long if I should win the Lotto. See Ya Soon
I sure don't mind the attention to detail but it seems more www.streetrodder.com than www.jalopyjournal.com. That's all I'm sayin'. Z
man that chassis is beautifull nice work. IMHO i think a built up flatty would look better, but its not mine cant wait to see the rest
