I will admit to a slight cuff of the jeans from time to time and many of my T-shirts are black or white or of the vintage cotton variety. I have also dressed like this for many many years. As far as a rumble, I wouldnt want to embarras my wife and kids, and at almost 40 it's not to cool. I noticed some white pride type tats in the crowds. They must think acting like hillbillys in So-Cal is the cool thing to do

Bob - To answer your question I will be there with my wife. But not my car. It'd a f@*$'in nightmare to get out after the show. I usually leave when Social Distortion comes on.

Sigh.....it's so pleasant being a guy in his early 60s with nothing to prove...just love of hotrods. love of driving hotrods...love of wrenching on hotrods, love looking at hotrods. Just being me takes all my time...I can't imagine how much work it must be to try to impress everyone with who I'd like to appear to be.
Welp...better get back to the garage where I can listen to the oldies station on my stereo without getting punched in the face.
To sum it up: I don't get it.......the whole "scene" thing. Rant over.

Mike Ness solo is great, but I'd get tickets to see him anywhere but at the Hootenanny. It is a h***le to get in and park. One lane in and one lane out for awhile. Also, it is brutal hot with only two beer stands. H2O is expensive as is the ****ty food. It is a lot of waiting in line. The fights are few and if you are paying attention to the bands (why else would you go) then you will probably miss the fights. I have been to most of the Hootenanny's since they started, but since the KROQ stand appeared I have stopped going. KROQ has nothing to do with the music played there. It just shows you how lame the Hootenanny has become! Lastly, the sound ****s. It is open air and the sound has nothing to bounce back on. Lots of treble and hardly any b***. Or lots of b*** and little treble. The sets are short because there are too many bands. Cops are waiting at the exit to give out DUI's (which isn't bad). Go see Mike Ness at HOB or wherever else he is playing.

    Bob,

If you've never been to the Hootenanny or seen Mike Ness, maybe you should go, just to experience it for yourself. It used to be pretty cool. That said, I haven't been in 4 years or so and won't go again, but I'm old and crowds scare me now ;)

If you are going to bring your car, plan on getting there at 5:00 AM or earlier to get a spot.

Haha that happened to me and little bro, was confusing.. I was trying to take pictures of the cars, and was getting dirty looks all around, I had to ask my little bro.. hey.. this is a car show, right ?.. as for the Hoot, I could give a HOOT.. ****py car show, HOT AS F*CK everythings expensive and tasteless, and dont get too close to mike ness, he gets nervous, the rest of his band however are really nice, or they were to me anyway.

Bad Bob aren't you the Bureau of Car Events for Socal. Taking pics and giving us a report on what we missed? Maybe you can stop by the Doll Hut? Is it still around? That was a cool place. If you go, say Hi to "Rockabilly" Bob, "Greaser" Bob, "Deuce" Bob, et al!

I went in the years when it first started in 97-98-98, I was about 19 so it was cool that it was all ages. The bands were great for the most part. In the early days they had chuck berry, russell scott, the paladins, jerry lee, big sandy etc etc. It was still a cool underground "scene" here in socal, lots more people that kept it traditional and "got it", alot of them also happened to be into bands like X, the cramps, social d. It was packed then, but not ridiculously packed. My uncle took his 56 cameo, and we had a cool time.

The place they had it was kick ***! It was at oak canyon ranch which had a big lake in the middle and lots of hills and gr***y areas to sit. But you would get people from OC, LA, San Diego, which is probably why there were little skurmishes even then. You would see a fight or two, but not a huge stupid rumble like in the video.

When KROQ (the local alterative rock station) started to sponsor it, it really all went to ****. All of a sudden, a bunch of idiots started going who weren't really into the music or cars.
It was always a sort of wierd mixed-crowd. Youd get skinheads, OC punks and greasers, (some racist), and the hispanic greasers, all from different parts of town, all thrown in the mix with lots of alcohol, so there was bound to be trouble from the start.
I think the whole tough guy greaser at***ude kind of started again in the 90's because a lot of kids who were greasers would get alot of **** from cholos, black gangs, trendy kids, bros at school etc. so they naturally formed into little greaser cliques. Now most of them dont even remember the times when it was cool and underground, and they just think its all about the tough guy image and wearing a lame jacket. Most of them dont even know about good music or building cars. Too bad because it used to be a cool show.

**** that place...years ago we rolled a bunch of flamed lowriders to the show, and we had to wait for the black flys "flamed 4 door-cadillacs" to go in first..then even ****pier cars go in after that because they "knew the promoter"...that was the last time for that...now all i hear is "fights & stabbings"..i can just go back to my old neighborhood for that ****.

Exactly... I actually took a car in years 2,3,4,and a few more times. It was good back then with just a "sub culture" crowd, and not with all the trendies makin trouble.
It was a good place to see music legends like Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buck Owens and even recently Link Wray.
I'll still go on occasion but its gone way downhill.

Glad I'm not the only one that feels this way,but some of the "car clubs" arebecoming the same thing too...To me,Hootenanny just isn't worth it any more...Over priced tickets, over priced beer, and over priced registration especially when you factor in the risk of these supposed "clubs" fighting and possibly ****ing up your car or endangering your life, and Hootenanny doesn't have some kind of insurance to cover possible damages..

I remember in the mid-90's when the gang bangers in SGV started to invade the punk scene as skinheads. You couldnt go to a backyard punk show without a mob of them showing up, although I think most of the shows were at their houses. But when I think back, it was all fun and I got along with those guys...despite the ducking for cover during shootings, getting out of the way and trying not to get involved with fights, dealing with gang members who were trying to prove something...
Its probably all those guys who are into the rockabilly car club thing now.

I will be there with the wife. But without the car and without the kid. I will probably spend about $100 on 6 beers, and then leave early because its too hot. We go every year, sometimes its GREAT, sometimes it ****S!
