If it is spot welded, then cut out the whole panel it is spot welded to, and weld it back in when you're done. If it is 4 rivets, just drill them out.

At work (I'm a sandblaster), we usually just cover up vin tags and stuff like that with a few layers of duct tape. Just make sure it's stuck down pretty good on there! :)

leave it on and cover it, you don't want some cop to think you faked it.

If ya get real technical about it, It's a felony to remove it period. However on the tri 5's you can run a good knife blade under it working as you go and the y will pop right off. Then use the famous JB Quick weld to put it back.

Don't remove it unless there is absolutely no way around it.
And if you do, certainly don't tell anyone.

Thats a felony in Texas? Here in the "free" state of Kalifornia it all depends on your intent. I'd just drill out the rivets and pop them back on when the time comes.

    This works very well.
Electrical tape (few layers) also works well.
I've done it a bunch of times, with small parts, in the blast cabinet.
I've blasted the hell out of mirrors, and other delicate parts, with no damge after masking them this way.

You might even make sure the blaster knows that you don't want that area blasted into oblivion. Let them/him know about the VIN tag and what you've done to protect it, and ask that they take a bit of diligent care around it.

Don't disturb it if at all possible. If it has to be removed save an invoice from the sandblasting to cover your ***.
In response to an earlier post vin tampering is a FEDERAL FELONY in all 50 states. With that being said........don't tell anyone.

I've used a rubberized tape used by people that sandblast designs/letters in cemetary headstones. The sand just bounces off. That said, that thick double-sided tape might work just as well.
