    OK

I'm a newb and I didn't see a "Things everyone already knows but obviously you don't" thread. :)

I'm wondering why they call them "G***ers". I looked around a little but didn't get instant gratification so I thought I'd ask.

Is there some specs that have to be met? Certain axles or height requirements? Is it alcohol related (pun intended)?

I hate being "that guy" :)

    thanks

  2. They were cars that ran in the GAS cl***es. There was a displacement breakdown as well, A/G, B/G etc.

I'm really glad that new folks can ask questions and get great responses without any at***ude. This board is one of the best things that traditional rodding has going.

    Dang, posted too soon :)

What octane was used by the blown cl***es, or was it all methanol back then (60's)?

Did not say I didn't feel welcome only that I had to watch what I said. Lemorris I think a 58 VW is a cool ride had one when I was growing up and we always tried to drive it on two wheels around corners.

MadMax, the g***ers back in the 60's used gasoline and was required by the organizations (NHRA & AHRA) most of the supercharged g***ers did use aviation gas and seems to me the octane was about 105. Most of the other gas cl***es B/G, C/G, D/G and up to F/G used just Ethel (2 grades back then regular & ethel) bought at the local gas station and seems like I remember buying some ethel as high as 95 or 96 octane at the stations. Also, all the gas back then contained lead to cut down on knock, ping. Methanol, ehanol, alcohol was not used much in drag racing back in those days except by the nitro racers to cut the percentage of the nitromethane down to what percentage we wanted to run 95% 93% 90% 85% etc. The nitro would not check at 100% due to the yellow dye and would only check true percentage at 69 degrees F. We also used other additives with the nitro and alcohol mix like hydrazine (very nasty stuff and very deadly on parts) and propolene oxide. After a run with hydrazine in the tank all the lines, tank and pump had to be drained, due to the nitromethane and hydrazine mix would become very volatile. Actually it would become hypergolic (fuel & oxidizer) and would not need and ignition source to cause an explosion.

  26. Welcome to the HAMB,ya fng/newbie/old bug driving/top down/artist type person.
I didnt go to the links that were already posted so I dont know how much info you got. The term "G***ER" came about during the N.H.R.A. nitromethane fuel ban in 1957{?}through1967{?}. I'm not 100% sure of the exact dates. All they were allowed to run on was gasoline, although some of it was probobly the real high octane aviation stuff. If that wasnt in the posted links,I hope it helps.

My Uncle ran a 55 Chevy in B and C/Gas at Connecticut Dragway and usually ran Sunoco 260, as did my father (it was Avgas me from the local airport in the late 70's/early 80's).

I've been told there was another unmarked notch at the pump (Sunoco 280?) that one could use to get even higher octane but I don't know if that were really true. Can anyone here confirm this?

There are a good many here into VW's (not myself so much) and this isn't a VW board but many would find your 58 interesting.

Black Magic just made a regular run of the mill crack. No big deal.
