I drug home a 50 Merc, I only had to cut 3 trees down to get it!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by INLAW MODEL A, Jul 5, 2008.

  1. I remember looking at this 50 Merc back in 1988 when I was 15 and thought how cool it would be to fix up. Well I didn't have a place to put it, or any money and forgot about as a project car. I have seen it sitting in the pasture on this guys property every time I went there and the last time I was there he said load it up! So yesterday I went back with a chain saw. It was sitting on an old tank off the ground so it is fairly good underneath. I pressure washed the moss off and it looks better already.
I called a friend of mine and told him I finally got the Mercury and he came over yesterday, and to my supprise he said it was his car back in 1970! He remembers studying for his drivers test sitting behind the wheel in the back yard. Later on, his buddy wanted to see if the car would do a burn out and he dumped the clutch and blew a hole in the overdrive transmission. The engine ran like a swiss watch so he sold it and the guy plucked the flathead 8 out for another car. That was 1971. He said the car was stolen before he got it and the kids side swiped something with the right side. He also said when he sold it, there were 4 1957 Ford hubcaps in the trunk. There is still one left! He also said that the kids torched off the rear quarters in front of the wheel with a torch for a unknown reason.
    It's a small world I tell you!!

Nice find, Nice to see that after 37 plus years of harsh wisconsin winters it still looks decent. Good luck on the project!

Congrats, what a great start. And a vintage PBR can in the trunk.

How did a pretty complete and straight 50 Merc sit in a field within eyesight for 20+ years w/o being sold is the big question?

  14. I've seen much worse as a starter project! FlamedAbone comes to mind...

i am diggin it for sure! i can relate to both set of pics, i have cut down trees and torn up fields just to get a car out. and the one of the Merc that Flamedabone started with reminds me of my 49 Ford i have in my back yard. looks damn near in the same condition just a shell on rails that i can push around while making car noises!! (we never grow out of it do we)
