Has any one ever swapped out the ring & pinion in a '49 chevy from the original 4.11 to 3.55. You can buy em from Patrick's. Question 2..... they cost $399.... can you just put 3.55 out of a '54 if you find one?

got the same thing about a year ago. have yet too put it in though. got the rebiuld kit for $299 too. you can find a torque tube out of any powerglide equipped car,53or54 and it will be 3.55:1. definitly cheaper to get a pg rear, i just spent so i could have all new parts.

I bought the complete torque tube rear end ***y from a PG car with 3.55 gears from Alex Gambino for $50...fresh lube and new shoes and bolted right end, cruises 70MPH easy now...$399 plus sounds high to me,do you no how many have been removed from these cars for the open driveline swap? ask around, there all over the place.

What about takin just the guts from a '53/'54 so I can actually have it shipped up to me in Canada? Would that work to take the guts and put em in my '49?

All the guts are a bolt in also, try and get the brakes too as the 49-52 were the Huck style and the 53-54 were Bendix type...way better,I also got the 54 front Bendix brakes from Alex, again a direct bolt on,stops on a dime and NO modern disc!
