I went brain dead last week and now must pay the piper. Two people, both HAMB'rs told me "take that thing the the glass shop and have the windshield removed, don't try it yourself". Listen did I...hell noooooo, so now I have to buy a new windshield to replace the one "I wouldn't crack". 1959 Ranchero windshield are expensive dudes, don't crack yours. Paying for a brain fart.........................
I have removed several by cutting the seal away. Cracked one putting it back in that had a rock chip in it. It's about time to take the glass out of my ranch wagon, and hope for the best. I don't have a new windshield in the budget either.
Crow,...... the other red meat. ( will keep a eye out for one at the Dearborn swap meet on the 19-20,.... good luck )
Exactly why I am having old beet help with mine. I am getting ready to change the front and rear gaskets for my 59 custom 300.
It isn't as easy as one would think. It doesn't take much at all to crack one. The thing is, glass shops will remove one pretty cheap.
got an extra one down here in fla. took a lotta patience ,just cut the gasket out and it popped out . there is a guy on ebay advertising them for $370 new if that helps
Many moons ago, I worked at a glass shop installing windshields among other things. I never did a 59 Ford but did do several 59 chevys. The 59's and 60's were probably the worst to install windshields. The extra little zig on the back top corner made it near impossible. Ford changed it in 1960 but Chevy waited until 1961. The shop always charged a little extra for these cars because we would break about 1 out of every five just putting them in.
Just so ya know, even glass shops crack them taking them out. And they won't guaranty that they won't.
Brings back (unpleasant) memories. Got the cracked one out fine, broke the new one putting it in. Shoulda done it the other way around.
Guess that's why I change 'em for a living. It's like I tell customers, when my pipes break I call a plumber.
funny... when I took the glass out of my 49 chevy I got on my back and pushed it out with my feet, both front and rear windows. didn't even cut the rubbers.. I think I may have lubed it up with armorall. both came out no problem. since then I got smart and have been much more careful and have broken 2 windshields in the process, on one I barely touched the glasswith razor while cutting the rubber and cracked the hell out of it I hate glass.
49-54 Chevys are easy as long as you take the belt trim off, it's a lot different from a wraparound windshield. In fact I took a '50 rear window out of the car just by pushing on it. Most of the late 50s car rubbers have a key strip, you pop that out and use something like a plastic scraper to loosen the rubber both from the glass and from the body lip inside and out. A little soapy water doesn't hurt either. If you do all that you should be able to push it out, I got several late 50's Mopar windows out that way - even a '58 Chrysler big back glass, which the guy who wanted it claimed was so breakage prone he had a special carrier to put it in in his van for the ride home, or it's own weight would make it break.
I broke some of them installing them in the GM plant. We hit them hard to set the sealer. Every once and a while one would just break. Not good when the boss was watching................
I once paid a professional to do mine and he broke it. Then said, " Oh, about 50 to 60% of 'em break on the way out." WTF? Since then I've done all my own glass too. It still scares me though.
few years ago i bought a parts car just cause it had the glass i needed....broke windshield and the drivers side rear glass removing them....still came out ok on the car. sold the trim for what i paid .but i STILL need the glass
