OK.. I am confused.. I bought a motor was a 350 (supposed to be) It come out of a buick malibu,.. something> I was there when they took it out. Car had been wrecked and it had just come in to the junk yard. I was looking for a SBC for my street rod.... SO anyway it was a 1976 model. I run across ANOTHER 350 motor and it was quite a bit newer. I wondered if maybe I might get it since maybe there would be much less wear. It's a 1983 or so model. Tore the 'new' motor apart today,.. and decided to check the numbers and see just what years the block showed... One block showed this as the numbers 14010203 The first one I bought was 355909. got my info here... is this correct?? http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php NOW both of themshow a C.I.D. of 305. Am I not reading something right... or are these 305 motors and not 350's Someone help me out. Now I'm confused. The 'new' motor even has the 'casting clock' that is mentioned on the link I listed... Someone who knows more than me... fill me in.
well the 14010203 is a 305 the other is either a 305 or a 262 but neither are 350's according to moretec
It'd help if ya had the 3 letter code off the pad in front of the p*** side cyl head. As an example, it should read like VO425MO with a smaller (sometimes) vin behind or just under it. The vin isn't always there. De-coding my example would tell us it was a 302 from a 67 Z28 built on april 25th at the Flint eng plant. V =Flint 0425=April 25th MO =67 302 The numbers you gave us indicate the block casting and can sometimes be used in multiple CIDs.
granted its not a 350 in my 1 ton wrecker its supposed to of had a 350, but the guys kept blowing it up so i put a 5.0 in and it has lasted almost 5yrs of abbuse, dont see a diff in power, i would build it in my opinion
As far as size and general appearance, all small blocks from 262 to 400 are the same. Are there differances and ways of telling them apart? Yea, but not from 20 feet away. If you pulled the heads off, you might measure the bore. But the casting numbers and ID numbers accurate. Larry T
hhuumm I'll go check... be right back.. we've been dis***embling the engine... One of the guys that sold us the motor was a long time friend of dads, and I fail to see why he;d lie about the size of the motor... also Dad is 80 years old and I think he pretty sure about a 350 when he sees one. I worked on 350's before I got disabled on a race team,.. and these look just like those... but part of my problem is confusion and memory loss. SO thats partly why I asked. I'll BRB
ok this is what it says... A25 D N K31 and it has thet clock face on it points to 5.... and outside dot is at top OH.. now this is on the side of the block... nothing on the front of the motor at all... anyplace else to look
DNK is a 79 305 from a Camaro/Firebird. Build it. Be sure to get rid of the OEM cam. They were improperly heat treated and wore out fast taking most of the motor with it. With gas over $4.00 a gallon a 305 is a decent choice.
ok.. appreciate the info.. and you guys jumping in to help an idiot.. couple questions if you don't mind... can you point me to where you found that. I always like to learn... Second.. Am I to understand that these same blocks were used to build both 305's and 350's..?? Lastly.. what parts are interchangle on them...?? thanks for educating me...
same block, same stroke, just smaller bore. If it's a HO 305 it can run just as hard as a 350. Headers, cam and carb intake change will make one hell of a differance. I've done it and damn near hit a fresh 4 bolt main 350 in the *** racing it actually I had to back out of it alittle so I woudln't hit it
so the bore.. do you just measure.. I ***ume you have to 'mic' it..?? All I have here at the present time is a tape measure... closest I can tell with what I have is about 3.75
seems everything keeps pointing back to a 305... I found this best I could measure with a tape measure was 3.75 and stroke was 3.5... pretty close to what the measurements show above... hhuummm
Unless you want to make a lot of HP the 305 is a good motor. Ive had one in my 38 chevy coupe since 2001 and its been a lot of miles at 20 MPG +. Didnt plan on using a 305 but had a low mileage one that came out of my sons wrecked S10 that was ready to go at the time I was ready for an engine for the coupe. Havent regretted it.
cool.. thanks everyone for the replies... keep them coming. I am about to build this motor.. need all the info I can get. Just fo9und out today all this where I am...
OK.. latest news... found out I have the 'hot' 305 set up... 601 heads, so I now question.. is the CAM still a "bad" one like someone mentioned above and chould be automatically replaced... or is it a 'better' one like the heads, etc that come with this block..??
OH.. I got a Holly carb for it... just happend to pick it up cheap... too cheap to p*** up. I'm sure it'll need to be rebuilt.. but even a rebuild kit, and someone rebuilding it is WAY cheaper than a new one. not sure which one it is... been trying to find some numbers in it,.. and a place so I can figure all that out. It has four holes all the same size. I'm thinking this is a good thing..?
DOOD, jam the 305 in there. Like they said, put a decent cam in there and your good to go. Mine is a 1978, with who knows how many miles, and gets a bazillion miles to the gallon, more or less. Goes zero to speeding ticket in no time, and is a blast to driv. Have fun with it!!-MIKE
