Got my new SBC stroker in my Model A and lookin' to rework the exhaust. I'm presently running block-huggers and 2" pipe back to
Flowmasters, then over the rear axles and out. Don't know what kind of Flows they are, but thinkin'/soundin' 40-series. I hate the "Mustang Sound" they have..........that's for Mustang Queers.

I have a 50-series on a '01 Silverado that sounds real good......mellow at idle and a bit louder and crisper, but still mellow when you're on the "Loud Pedal."

I'm thinking of a couple of 24" Summit Gl***packs backwards and some 2-1/4" pipe in and out. I read all the pros and cons about fibergl*** burn-outs, but when I was a kid we used to put used motor oil in new ones and light 'em up, to burn the gl*** out of them. New, they're only $36.00 a pair, so no problemo.

I need a sound that's not Mustang or a Flathead...........somewhere in between. I'm thinking the 2-1/4" pipe will make the gl***packs sound deeper, and I can always change out the tailpipes to 2-1/2" for a little more rumble.

Anybody out there "smellin' what I'm a-steppin' in??"

I had the shortest 2 1/4 inch Smithy's behind my 315 hemi. They sounded good, but the front part of the case rusted out about a year in. After a month or so most of the paint was burned off the front. So...if you want to run Smithy's I'd suggest checking them periodically. Maybe adding some high-temp paint every now and then would have helped, I don't know. Wasn't really too concerned being only $20 some a piece.

I am however going with Cherry Bombs this time around!

And Flowmaster 40-series do sound good, I've got 'em on my '75 Monte Carlo with dumps right before the rear axle...and that's where they'll stay...they're definitely not the right sound for my '56 Dodge, in my opinion.

My buddy has the Flowmaster Hushpower II gl***packs on his '53 Pontiac, behind a 300 horse SBC...and they do sound pretty good at idle and normal cruise. But they're pricey.

Cheery bombs or brockmans mellow tones last longer than the smittys, their the heavy bottle type.

I've got 24" x 2-1/2" Summit gl***packs behind the 351C in my F100 and I was really surprised how much I like the sound! I bought them becuase they were cheap, and I also grew tired of the Flowmasters I used to run, but I was pretty stoked by the change in sound.

The 24" are pretty loud and crackly at idle, and they only pop waaaaay up in the revs unlike some longer/smaller dia. packs. I've gotten more complements about my exhaust with these cheap-*** cans than any other set-up before.

In short... do it! Like you said, if you don't like 'em, they're cheap!

i never thought any one else ever called those guys Mustang Queers. Gl*** packs are way stupider sounding than a flo master though. Maybe if you had a z-71 with a 350 chebby.........yeee haw.

I put gl***packs behind my 289 for the exact same reason. I hated the tingy sound of my buddy's stang. I ran an H-pipe cause someone told me it mellowed the sound, but it ended up sounding like a tractor or something. Then I swapped to edelbrock heads and now it sounds sweet! Real throaty at idle and a nice smooth roar with the pedal down. Cruising is nice with no bad reverbs.

What about the Summit Turbos?.........says it's a deep performance tone muffler. As long as it's not the sound of the '90's.....Flowmaster.

On my '34 with a built 350, I went from 2-1/4" pipes with "turbos" to straight pipes (real loud) to Cherry Bombs and I really like the rap and crackle of the 'Bombs. $50/pair.

i have a pair of those on my 51 Ford and i really like them. they have a real deep tone thats throaty when your in it and mellow at cruising speeds. i have 2 1/2" pies to the mufflers then 2 1/2" turn downs before the axle. with a fat cam and some serious compression and head work it sounds great!!

  14. Cherry bombs on the 354 Hemi makes a great cracking sound and if you get on it it will set of car alarms, but if you stay out of it it is just mellow.
