I'm installing a rollcage in my '56 and would like to see some pics of other completed installations. The IHRA rulebook seems to call for attaching the hoop to the frame on full-framed cars. I bought a Ch***is Engineering cage and the main hoop runs parallel with the side of the car and ends up at the rocker area (not on top of the frame). Is it OK to weld it to plates at the floor/rocker area and use the other shorter legs angled in to attach to the frame? Seems like that must be what they intended. Directions are too vague, skipping all around the topic and mostly discuss sub-framed cars.
Yep. If you want your body to still be removable, sandwhich the floor between two plates (one on top of the floor, and one welded to the shorter length,)and bolt them together with a min. of 4 bolts. I don't know what cl*** or what speeds you are running, but I know in NHRA this is OK into the 9's as long as your floor isn't too heavily modified. I would gusset the shorter lengths of tubing where they meet the frame as well if I where you.
I'm not sure on IHRA but the NHRA rulebook states that all cars with an OEM frame must have the rollbar attached to the frame ... the frame may have 'outriggers' such as these shown to satisify the requirement.. CC
PROEnfo is right about if it has a full frame it has to be welded to the frame only sub-frame cars can sandwich the floor. The NHRA rule book spells it out better than the IHRA depending on what ET is denotes what kind of roll bar or roll cage you need to have.
Also if you are not planning on getting it certified than it really does not matter as long as it is done safely.
Yep. Gotta build outriggers. if You make it into Austin, You can take a look at the one I just finished.
