Hi, just had hardened valve seats & valve stem seals on the heads done of my 430. Started her up, tick over fine but top end rattle. Took advice form HAMB board & bought Adjustable rods from Smiths ( GREAT service ) just fitted them as per the manual & stil1 have noisy top end!!! Any advice anyone? Anyone faced same problems at all? Cheers
If you're certain that you have everything adjusted appropriately then it may be a lifter problem. Did you replace the lifters as well? If not and they are worn, one may have partially collapsed due to the new stresses of the rebuilt heads and fully adjusted pushrods. Can you use a stethoscope on it to pinpoint where in the top end the noise is coming from, if not from the lifters?
Had a simular problem years back on a 410 E475 motor thats almost the same as your 430, mine was just plain worn out though. Might be better if you describe the method you used to adjust the lash, then we can throw some ideas back at ya! Also wondering if you may have some weak lifters or oil feed to them, how long have you run the motor since you fired it up as that may be a factor too.
Thankyou Dave!! & Kev & to you BigDdy31. Everything seemed fine before heads came off, no top end noise at all. Put them back on, severe noise & some valve springs not goin down too much. Ran for about 5 mins, put some oil down rods to lifters & those valves& rods began to move ok but still oisy. Took switch off oil filter & oil was comin out & increased when revs so pressure seems there albeit little velocity tho ( is that normal? ) Decided on the adjustable rods on recomendation from Lincoln officiando set the clearances up as per the manual but still clatters like a diesel. He has since said to try & tighten them up to touch tops of valves but not too tight but have yet to try that. Any further ideas chaps? no more quips from you either Dave!
If I'm correct, 430 Lincolns do not have adjustable rockers. Anytime that you've changed valve height ie; hard seats/new valves etc., push rod length becomes really important. Adjustable push rods are a way to go, but you still have to have proper lifter pre-load; start somewhere in the area of .030 minimum, .060 maximum. You should be able to experiment with lifter pre-load with your adjustable push rods. Also, check your rocker arm shafts for wear, if you haven't already done so. And also, check oil flow to the top end; if it looks to have a shortage of oil, try squirting some oil on it while it is running & see if the noise goes away. You can still have good oil pressure but not good oil flow to the top end. Oil does not run up the push tube but through the p***ages in the head...so if it's partially blocked ie; headgasket, etc., oil flow will not be adequate. I'm sure you already know most of this stuff...just thought I'd add my two cents. More than likely, your problem has to do with valvetrain geometry.
Hey thanks for all that. Hoping to get to tackle it again on Weds. Have already set it to .067 but may have to reel it in a bit. Will let you know. 59 TBird eh?? Check out this 59 convertable just imported from CA & for sale in the UK. Cool cars, good luck with your rebuild! Thanks again, Steve
Thanks Steve~good luck with your project as well! I tried to post a pic of my engine...but after 45 minutes of trying; I will concede to defeat
I'm not familiar with 430's, but do know that many shaft-type OHV's like this have important and picky ***embly details related to top end oiling: There are often special undercut bolts, gaskets that must be ***embled in a particular orientation, or notches in particular rocker stands/shafts that have to be oriented correctly to allow oiling. Get hold of a manual before you kill the thing!
