Has anyone heard that VP Fuels may be charging $145 per gallon of nitro?

I know nitro is very difficult to come by, however; this is not good for the average guy who is attempting to run a nostalgic nitro car.......

I've heard it was going to $800.00 - $850.00 per barrel and next year for the same price there would only be 40 gallons in a barrel. Maximum allowed in any pit a any given time 40 gallons. You can thank the homeland security agency price increase and the 40 gallon rule. If you remember Tim McVeigh used nitro and fertilizer for the Ok. City bombing.

Wow I hope that someone gets this figured out!

  6. It was $25.00/gallon at BG. Then the next week it was $35.00. Any higher and no way can the nostalgia show & cackle guys afford to do it anymore. The tracks or someone is going to have to foot the gas and nitro bill if they want the cars to appear at their races.

I have comitted to the HAMB Drags and will be there because of what Ryan and the HAMB guys mean to me accomplishing the re-creation of my AA/F Coupe. But after that, if a track wants it there, they are going to have to help with the gas and pick up the nitro costs. I don't want to make any money on this, but the costs are getting out of hand.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Price should settle around $2000 a drum by INDY .. That's why I just mine

  8. They said on the NHRA show the other week that its made in China and they are slowing production down to clear the air up a bit in time for the Olympics....

  9. You old guys may remember this but in 1979, when nitro went to $8.75 a gallon, I quit fuel and changed to blown alky. Back then, we got $450 to qualify for a top fuel show.

I stayed with nitro until 83 and then switched to blown alky in 84 when we formed the Alky dragster circuit. I got tired of the nitro costs, parts breakage and had really gotten a belly full of NHRA's ******** by then. We had alot more fun and nearly offset all our costs in 85, 86, 87 and 88. We sold atleast 2 shows to Amarillo and San Antonio per year and had shows in Springfield Mo., Gulfport Ms., Monterry Mx. Green Valley and some others that escape me at this time (ol' timers disease) We also had the pleasure of supplying 4 alky diggers for the last drag race at the Valley, what a sad day that was for us. I started going to the Valley in 1960. That is where I made my first p*** in a front engine dragster.

Tracks would pay the racers decent money back in those days for a good show. I remember being paid $800.00 cash for 1 p*** at Springfied, Mo. due to a rainout after 1st. round of emiminations. Not bad money for an alky digger. Alky was a buck a gallon by the barrel and gas for the dually was cheap. P

  11. There's talk that once the price gets high enough, the US companies that quite producing (cuz they weren't making enough profit) will come back on line. The price will still be through the celling, but at least it will be produced here.
Don't ya fell better that some American greedy fat cat will get the bigger profits rather than some Commie rat *******.
I was hopin' to put a little pop in my Fiat comp coupe just for the fun and smell of it, guess it's gunna be a 100% alky toy.

funny thing about monopolies....Even though They're Your balls, someone else is stepping on them.

I don't care what kind of fuel it is....something serious is gonna have to change before it becomes affordable again. Hell, even the price of Alky is up!

Has Angus Chemical quit producing nitro? Angus was or is a subsidiary of Dow Chemical. At ont time they were the only producer of nitro in the U.S. and was produced in Texas.

Guess the corporate big wheels just want the rich folk to have fun these days. My pappy always told me a big wheel is something a big dog pisses on. Wake up and smell the nitro.

Yeah, thats what I read a month ago. The Chinese are making a major attempt to make their polluted country look good on TV. The Chinese govenment has forbidden most people from going to work during the Olympics to try to curb traffic and smog problems.
China is a cesspool of pollution. They are still dumping waste products straight out of the factorys into the rivers. Getting O/T, here...carry on....

As I understand Mr. McVeigh went big time with the nitro.

McVeigh actually used ammonium nitrate fertilizer mixed with diesel fuel......No nitromethane was used, they couldn't have afforded it even back then.

Angus and Commerical Solvents have been out of this business for the past 10 plus years. Since then it's been the Chineese making the stuff............:(

When there was 10 cackle diggers, Steve Gibbs provided the fuel for free. Now that there is 500 of them, you're on your own.

  20. Well, like I said, after the HAMB Drags, I will likely retire the AA/F Coupe to the museum. I was considering taking her to Ardmore and still want to take her to Bakersfield, but just the gas will be a thousand dollars from Houston --RT-- Bakersfield. The Nitro will be another $500, and that is if I can find some.

    SFDH it all anyway.

There was some guys in Bakersfield who were letting people sit in the seat for a $100 while they ran the car for a few minutes each. I looked at the line and it was mostly women.

Now, either women really like nitro, or their lovers are letting them down...

    Anyway, it's just an idea...

  23. And if you find one you like, offer her a free dinner out for being the 100th customer while you're at it and see where that leads.

  24. LOL,,,,I'll just take the $100.00. Don't need any dinners with the gals. Got one and she is all I can handle. Besides, not too sure what to do with her if i caught her.
