I have the 52 chevy that member slide use to own, being that I dont drive it that much I am thinking about getting Antique plates.. it will save me a few bucks plus no inspection..no problem with the car passing, just another hassle that I wont have to deal with......

any thoughts? I had signed on to look around and was reminded that I might need to post something ever once in awhile..lol

You can run YOM plates and register it as either "classic" or "antique." I'm doing that but registered as "classic" which means I still have to get inspections etc. If you register with YOM plates as "antique" you don't have to get in spected etc. That's what I would do if that's the way you want to go. The official "antique" plates look stupid IMHO.

I run mine with "classic plates" I am supposed to get it inspected but have not and have not had anyone ask. I think with the "antique" classification there are some mileage restrictions that made me go ahead with "classic"

I had my 50 Chevy first registered with antique plates, I have a set of YOM plates which I'm going to put on it, it just looks cooler with the YOM plates. I have a spare set of 52 YOM plates sitting on the shelf at the moment.

I've got antiques. I've never been too worried about how the license plate looks.....I've never seen a car and said "wow, thats cool but that antique tag makes it look like shit!!" The registration was like $120 for 5 years, and the car would never pass a current inspection anyway.

Pretty sure there aren't mileage restrictions (there are with antique type insurance policies though), but you are only supposed to drive it to and from car shows, to and from repair facilities, and in parades. I've been stopped once since I registered and started driving mine in March, I was on the way to work and I work at a Rod shop, told him i was taking it there to work on it so the guy let me off.

Driven by tons of police officers since and haven't had any problems before or since then.

Just tell them you're at the front of the parade and everyone else will be along in half an hour or so.

I also imagine with YOM plates they wouldn't notice it as much.

This is true. I haven't had a current inspection sticker on my truck in months but don't get a second look from any officers. When they see an old car runnin' old plates they don't bother with it too much.

Texas has changed the way it handles YOM plates this year. Instead of a little metal tag on the plate you now have to put the registration sticker in the front windshield just like every other car. To me it defeats the purpose of running YOM plates.
As for the driving restrictions a friend in the Model A Club made the point that part of the club bylaws is to recruit new members and driving the car is promoting the club and Model A's.

Try living in a small town and having antique plate on your daily driver. I've been harassed more than ever. When I lived in Dallas I never saw the same cop twice in a week. Here we only have like 6 cops in the whole town. I've been stoped and hasseled more than I'd like to think about.

Your not supost to drive them with antique plates other than to a car show or in a parade. You can get a ticket if they think you are driving it more than you should.

That said I will still drive mine every day no matter what the cops say. It's my car and I'm going to enjoy it as much as I damn well please.

I just reg my 1970 Torino with 70 plate for the 2nd time, They gave me a new little medal tag with the new small sticker $62.80, I also reg my 31 Roadster this year, I first went to a small sub-station and the stated that they stop the small tags because of cost! well I went to the main office (Airport Blvd) and asked, they gave me the small tag, no questions, both have YOM plates (I peeled the window sticker off)

Thats not just your average kid riding shotgun. I would almost bet you are off limits with her in the car. They probably have pictures of her off the HAMB pasted on dash boards just so they don't hassle you! LOL.

I put Antique plates on my T coupe for looks. I also went and had it inspected just to make sure everything was safe and I mean safe. I've never been hasseled.

The jack asses that work in tax assessor/dmv offices do not even know the damn laws regarding antique vehicles. They tried to overcharge me until I quoted the law out of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code for them. Reading the fine print, there are no mileage restrictions.
The rules for an antique plate are as follows:

    (1) is at least 25 years old, if the vehicle is a
    passenger car, truck, or motorcycle;
    (2) is a collector's item;
    (3) is used exclusively for exhibitions, club
activities, parades, and other functions of public interest and is
    not used for regular transportation
    ; and
    (4) does not carry advertising.
</pre>I would say number 3 is a pretty vague rule. None of those activities are regulated nor are they defined in the transportation code. Club activity? That can be meeting a couple of buddies at your favorite local drinking establishment to converse over what you got a Home Depot yesterday. Exhibition or Function of Public Interest????

-"Where are you going in that old jalopy there, son?"
-"Well officer, I am going to a function of public interest."
    -"Where is that at?"
    -"California, Sir."

There are no defined limitations to mileage in regards to these activities. Whenever you are driving, wherever you destination is, can be considered an exhibition, club activity, or function of public interest. Can they tag you on it? Sure, but it would take them way more time than what most are willing to waste to win in court over something like that. The law is not well-defined, so it is open to a little bit of interpretation.

I am running classic truck plates and went through the safety inspection. To me it just made sense to have the inspection sticker. It is only $14.50. I know the truck is safe but having the state confirm it may cover my ass a little. Also my insurance coverage required the inspection. I hope to have the truck put through the NSRA safety tech inspection at the next meet I attend.

It's not so much a safety issue....my car is a '31 Ford, hot rod. In essence it is unsafe. But the brakes work fine. I've got turn signals. I've got 3 tail lights, 2 more than the car would have come with stock. If I did have a horn, the car is loud enough that you probably would't hear it anyway. I'm not worried about what the state considers safe. In fact, if I put a regular registration and inspection sticker on my windshield, it would cut my visibility in HALF, making it very unsafe to drive.

The NSRA safety inspections are a joke. They are nazis.

we have a winner. Whatever you do, copy, and carry with you, any and all applicipable statutes, regarding the tags, and inspection/lack therof for your vehicle. I've run YOM plates on my 69, as an antique, and have had to show several "law enforcement professionals" that my truck did NOT have to have an inspection sticker. Not to mention the code compliance officer in the city i live in.

i am either coming from a shop, going to a car show, or a club function. Being schitzophrenic does have its abvantages sometimes

I get stopped for not running a front license plate, then have to go thru the the whole "I only got one plate from the state, no, it DOES NOT need an inspection sticker, ok, go ahead and write the ticket, (you moron), I don't know ALL the traffic laws in Texas, but I dang sure know the ones relevant to me, and after they call it in, it's "no problem officer/trooper, thanks for not asking for proof of insurance, because I forgot it." And of course, since it IS a cool old car, I believe "EVERYWHERE I GO IS A CAR SHOW". Bob's got it right.

Hey guys, just thought I'd share my TX antique plate experiences with everyone. As long as the car in question isn't your true registered daily driver I think they're the greatest thing ever. In my experience, most cops are in the dark about the laws governing the use of antique plates and don't want the hassle. Don't get me wrong, if you get pulled over for something stupid, and you're not on your way to or participating in a car show or club function, you can be cited.
    1. 1966 Plymouth Satellite - I've had antique plates on it for about 6 years. I didn't have any YOM plates so it has the antique plate in the rear and the old original one in front which is technically illegal but as mentioned above this is a grey area in the DOT laws. They only give you one plate, you can't run two different ones on the same car, and you're required to run two. I don't drive this car very much and don't run inspection, but I've never had a problem. To be honest, if I ever get pulled over by a cop that will be the least of my problems as I'll surely get an exhibition of acceleration ticket.
    2. 1962 Impala - this car is essentially my daily driver, I'm running YOM
plates so it also has a registration sticker on the windshield which shows an expiration of 3/13. I was parked at the local Goodyear a couple of weeks ago and I watched a cop walk over and check out the sticker because it looked strange. He never said a word though.
    3. My brothers 1974 Valiant - he's been running antique plates since they were available for his car - never a problem.
    4. The best - my Dad's 1969 Roadrunner - about 8 years ago my brother and I took it down the road after putting it back together. - 383 with open headers, 4-speed, 4.56 gears, no windshield, no back glass, antique plates, no inspection and no insurance. A sheriff deputy heard us, never saw us, he didn't understand the antique plates but he was incredulous about the whole affair, my brother got a ticket for exhibition of acceleration ticket and nothing else.
