Customs Get a Little Poon

  1. Erik, that's fucked up, sorry to hear that. Keep your head up and you have the right attitude about it. Ten years from now, hopefully you can laugh about it...sucks now though.

I'm glad you talked it out reasonably with the guy, you've got a lot of class for taking the step back and acting *gasp* like an adult.

    good karma

My flamed '62 wagon was (minorly) hit 3 times in Seattle after I painted it. All 3 people had insurance and that was roughly 8,500 bucks to me. Be sure to FIGHT THE INSURANCE COMPANY for every dime. They'll have adjusters that used to be painters. Most of these guys worked collision and some may have a bit of custom experience, but I'd bet NOTHING close to what that car has on it. Get every DIME of time! They might even try to "total it" so get a good appraisal too.

Look at it as food on the table for Harpoon and your body man and maybe a bit for you too. Sounds like you showed a lot of character when it happened...Pretty cool.

I was there and I am still in shock.

I wish I could see the look on those insurance guys faces when they see the car. probably the only people in the pacific northwest who wont be smiling when they see it.

I talked to the kid and didnt sugercoat it either.

there are several ways we can fix it, and the easy way, well that doesnt exist.

I dont see this car that often, but when i do im floored. i look at it and think to myself "did i really do this?"
This car is Eric(forsakenfew) i could not have done this paintjob for anyone else.
I guess the car was really wanting me to come back up to seattle.

there are a lot of media influences showcasing jackassery on motorcycles. this needs to stop.

  8. Man, I was thinking about this all day yesterday. I know you talked with Sam, and he told you to get estimates from the high $$$ street/hot rod shops...a standard collision shop that "Joe schmuck insurance" might tell you to take it to won't even begin to understand what will need to be done to fix.

I also agree with Conder...get the car appraised. That way, when "Joe schmuck insurance" tells you "Our book says a 1960 Catalina in average condition with no interior is worth 5k" you can say "Well, MY appraisal says it's worth 30k".

Another thing...make sure, when the payment is sent, that they check is made payable to you and only you. Not you and "bob's collision" or you and anyone else. You own that car outright so they can't force you to include a repair shop on the check like they could if you had a loan on the car (protecting the lienholder's investment). It is YOUR car, and YOU have every right to take the $$$ and go any fuckin place you please to have it repaired.

Remember, the way insurance works is a bit different than everything else. They'll tell you what they think the damage is worth. The "Burden of proof" (technical insurance jargon) is on you to prove different.

Don't be afraid to call if you have ANY insurance questions....

  9. You seem to be taking it well, I'd still be in jail, and that kid would be getting what was left of his motorcycle surgically removed from his rectal cavity. I don't give a fuck if it was an accident or not, That's ridiculous! It makes me sick and it's not even my car.

Dude that sucks. At least there are one or two high end paint shops in Seattle that can give good estimates for the insurance company.. I do not see how you would not have to strip it all off and start over. Matching the colors will be almost impossible, even with blending on both sides to try and make it look the same.

What if the damaged side got painted Asymetrically (diferent from the right)
VonDutch used to do asymetric flames, when asked about them he said something to the effect of "you dont see both sides of the car at once..."

    Just a thought.

STILL waiting to hear from Grundy...and yes,,,have a few shops in mind for estimates.

it's gonna be a bitch to match. Harpoon and "world famous Swindler Sam" will make it happen....if it aint gonna work....we'll just re-panel the WHOLE damned car!!!

    Hey
Feel free to give me a call if I can be of some advice.
I have been battling insurance companies over classic cars for many years.
It is all about how you handle it on how it works out.
    Good Luck
