    Hola.

Getting the car bug in my middle age, but I want to build it myself as much as reasonably possible. I've lurked at the HAMB and a couple other forums for quite some time, and finally decided to become a member.

I like cars from the 40s-early 50s, but I'm also keeping my options open, as I like pretty much anything pre-60's.

I'm currently in Iraq for the next 9 months or so. So plenty of time to plan my build.

Thanks all. Things have calmed down here quite a bit since last year. The last rocket attack we had where I'm at was 2-3 months ago.

As far as the car thing goes, what's the best option for a total FNG? I'm between trying to find a half-done 40s-50s project, or building my own coupe rod, possibly from a kit.

Hey! I'm new here also and just getting started on a hotrod truck. As far as deciding what to build, I think you should follow your heart. What kind of ride do you most want to end up with? If you run into a snag, there's always a way to get past it. Good luck, hurry home.

Hey Scotty, sure you'll come up with a plan for a cool rod.

I saw a thing on yahoo about Iraqis who are motor heads with the need for speed

Get on back and start building your machine

I remember my father telling me how he managed to keep his sanity in Korea by thinking about what kind of car he was going to build when he got home. He ended up with a pretty good hot rod when he managed to get stateside, and I know you will as well.
Welcome aboard from another newbie, and thanks for all you do.

Hey Scotty. Thank for everything you are doing over there. The best thing to start on is something that is all original and just start from scratch. i wouldn't go with a kit but thats just me. you will learn alot more if you do it all from scratch. The guys here can help alot. Get back in one piece. Give 'em hell.

    Welcome and God's speed.
I'm a FNG here, the HAMB, too but been at Bragg for about 8 years minus Iraq and Korea. There's all kinds of projects lurking around Fayettenam; just depends on what you're looking for. We'll get you hooked up when you get back. Need to see if there are any other Veterans comming home from "Over There."

    Scotty-
When you're back stateside "god willing" you won't have to be where i'm at (Walter Reed Army Hospital) but give a shout. There's several of the vets and actives here who are always happy for someone else to swap ideas with. There's been more than a few (parts and projects)built here since I run the machine and welding shop.
If you need anything let me know since I should be able to get it sent in the next load of care packages from base.

welcome Scott......thanks for doing what you do so we can do what we do. Hurrry Home !!

  22. Good Morning (evening for you) Scotty

Just wanted to chime in and thank you and your brothers for the sacrifices you are making to protect our freedoms here at home. You may not get an actual pat on the back from me (hope someday you do), but I really do appreciate what all our troops do for us. All of you are in our prayers. Godspeed and see you stateside.

I have ties to Bragg, too. I was born at the old Womack in 1963. Dad was enlisted from 1959 to 1963 and was assigned to Bragg and the "All-American" 82nd. I have always been proud of our military heritage, but the 82nd is special to me.

As others have said, the area around Bragg has its share of '50's and '60's cars and trucks...perfect fodder for the rod of your dreams. I'm a couple hours away, but I'd be happy to do what I can for you when you get back. Anything really special to you? Any favorites? Send us a list as time gets closer to you getting back, and the guys here will keep a look-out for you. Keep your head up...er....down! See you stateside!

    Again, God Bless
    Brett

Thanks all for the encouragement and support.

My son was also born in the old Womack hospital in 2000. It's now used as an improcessing/outprocessing center for Ft Bragg.

I hope to get him involved in this project when I get it.

Right now I'm keeping my options open. My biggest fear is getting over my head and not being able to finish a project. As far as favorites I like 40's and early 50's Chevys, Dodges, Hudsons, and Pontiacs; although, I wouldn't turn down a Ford or Merc. I also like coupes, t-buckets, and bobbed roadsters. So far I've considered these options:

    A) Getting an unfinished project from someone else. Not the best thing if I want to learn, but I can also be reasonably assured that with the right car, I can finish the project.

    B) Go for it and build a coupe/t-bucket/bobber from scratch, possibly with a aftermarket chassis and rebuild a motor from the junkyard or craigslist. Can get expensive, but coupes seem rather simple. Besides, I got a beer keg in the garage that's waiting to be used for a gas tank.

    C) The one that will probably piss-off people here: get a cheap, crappy bug and cut it up volksrod style. I mean, who cares if you f**k-up a bug? Then go get a real rod later after I've cut my teeth.

    Any input is appreciated.

So many folks get started on big projects but never finish because they took on too much project for their skill level or it required more time or money than their life will allow.
I say get an almost finished project, any brand/body as long as it is re-sellable, finish it up and get driving it. When you get tired of it and want a change sell it then get what you really want. You will have some extra cash from the sale provided you bought and sold wisely and some more knowledge, experience and confidence to take on a bigger project. My $.02.

    Thank you for your service.
