I used a K&N in my 94 Chevy truck with throttle body fuel injection. Never noticed a mileage gain.

I just got one for my 04 Chevy truck with multi-port and gained nearly 1 mile per gallon.

    Never used royal purple.

Ive got a K&N on my 327 , I bought it mostly for its filtering qualities. It seemed to improve the performance of the engine..Hard to tell about the fuel economy issue. Too hard for me to keep my foot out of it:cool:

I used a K&N in my 94 Caprice Wagon. Noticed a nice increase in breathing. I wasn't concerned then about fuel mileage but being more efficient can't hurt.

  5. Most k&n's have lesser filtering capabilities than a stock filter. On a car with a mass air flow sensor they are really not a good idea. I'd sacrifice a mile to the gallon and stick with an oem style filter. As for performance i cannot attest to changing any filters and it having any adverse affect other than maybe a cool new noise with wide open throttle. I havent used royal purple, i have heard praises but never for mileage gains.

I used Amzoil in all of the cars and trucks around here, I just added an K & N filter on the 93 Surburban. I woll tell you in two weeks if it make a difference.
I get 20MPG on the Burg doing 65 on the highway.

  7. More air does not mean more efficient, the o2 sensor will sense the extra air and adjust fuel trims accordingly.

got one on my daily, 05 Dakota with 4.7 V-8. They advertise all of 9 hp increase at 4000 rpm and better mpg. I don't see a enough differance to spend that kind of bucks. Plus the pain in the ass of cleaning and reoiling. If ya just wamt to swap filters and go you need 2 so the other one can dry.

I replaced the dirty paper filter in my '97 Silverado, 5.7/auto, 2wd, with a K&N and went from a best of 17mpg on the highway to 18mpg at 75mph. I'm thinking my mileage might increase a little if I slow it down....

Picked up 1 mile per gal. when i switched over to mobile 1 5-30 oil, then
another mile per gal. when i installed a k&n air filter.
now averaging 22 miles per gal. combination x-way and surface streets
28 miles to work each way.

As PeteMattersen suggested on a late model with a mass air flow sensor not a great idea. As also stated the computer sensor will adjust for the volume of air. If you use one on a late model be very careful not to over oil the filter element. The filter oil will effect the MAF. General maintenance would be to clean the MAF with carb cleaner, off the vehicle, to remove the oil residue. I've used K&N filters for many years on my Hot Rods, they really work in dusty dry locations. The FOGGER

  12. I had a K&N air filter in my '55 Chevy. It provided a slight milage increase, but not enough to justify initial purchase price.

The REAL savings was in NOT HAVING TO BUY NEW FILTERS regularly. If you plan to keep the vehicles for a few years, K&N air filters are a good investment, but because of reduced long-term maintenance costs, not more MPG.

I have no personal experience with Royal Purple products.

    Hope this helps.

94 Chevy pu daily driver. average 17MPG on Royal Purple 15w-40w. I was running a K&N but switch back to stock filter. Don't know if the air filter helps millage. I do know the Royal Purple is better than Amzoil or Mobil one. I am know pushing 250k on the odometer.

The K&N filter oil is known to coat the MAF sensor. I've never had it happen to me. Just don't drown the filter. As for fuel economy, no difference. Never tried the royal purple.

I used to take the air cleaners off on my 54 to drag race, this last test and tune, I tried with and without. Leaving the two K&N's on, and no other changes, resulted in a 17.38, without the filters, 17.46
So almost a tenth, and also 1 mph better. So at WOT they would be better than no filter.

As far as Royal oils, I use Castrol Syntec most of the time, And can tell you that a few years ago, I was tracking fuel mileage real close and determined that the total cost of the oil was gotten back plus more in a 3000 mile change cycle. It's like free oil. It's a slight mileage improvement, I don't remember the numbers, but the results were good enough to use the synthetic. We tested on a carb Ford 300 Bronco and a F.I. Mustang Cobra 302.

I've got the K&N on my daily S-10 but it was on there when I got it so I can't comment on the mileage but I like the idea of just cleaning it instead of replacing.
I've been using Royal Purple for a few years now in the '32. It maintains oil pressure better after warmup than the 20W30 I was using. Just changed the wife's '37 over to Royal Purple and the oil pressure is better going down the highway and hot idle oil pressure is higher.

Of course one has to clean their MAF once inawhile if running a car with one.

A K&N and synthetic oil will increase your gas mileage. This is also true with the rear differential. The first car I used this stuff on, I saw a 2 MPG change for the better. On my current daily driver, I couldn't tell you only because it was bought with 7800 miles on it, and the filter and Mobil 1 products went in right away. And at 195K, the truck still runs great.

As mentioned, on an EFI vehicle it's important to keep MAP/MAF sensors reasonably clean and checking it when clening the filter is a good idea.

I don't know about mileage but when I put the K&N air filter on my plugs went from black to brown. Doubt that had anything to do with mileage but the engine runs good.

I installed a K&N FIPK kit in my '03 Dodge Hemi PU. Gained about 1.5 mpg. Gained some HP also. The mileage computer helped to check mileage.

Another vote for synthetic oil, not necessarily royal purple though.

If you don't have a clutch posi, use synthetic gear lube too.

    good luck

I've heard good things about royal purple in the rear end noticiably decreeasing friction. Since you only change it once every few decades that sounds like a good value to me, I'm going to try it on my next swap.

I dont' run synthetic in my engine since its used and I'm just too cheap. I dont believe any combination of K&N and synthetic will get you more than 1mpg extra *maybe* , not enough to be much more than a rounding errorwhen figuring out your mileage. I'd love to be proven wrong.

I was running a K+N circle track filter on my 350 powered C10. It's the one with the ugly looking dimple over the inlet, and has a contoured base to match the 500 Cfm Holley. It did make more power than the stock Qjet type filter, and the plugs showed it was running leaner. They say to up jet 3 sizes to compensate for the change in airflow, but from what I could tell it was perfect where it was, so I made no changes. MPG was about 18 on the highway, with about 325 hp, a mild converter on the th350, and 340 gears.

Used to run a K&N on my Shovel (S&S Super G). Havn't got figures but am sure of power/economy gains due to improved volumetric efficiency. Lower viscosity oil can help both too, but TAKE CARE.

I use K&N in my daily drivers. Never checked mileage, but a noticable difference in performance. Who knows, maybe it's all in my head!

What funny about the K&N filter is that you only gain HP's at full throttle , which is good but i doubt any milage increase would be noticable. If the purple stuff proves less friction then it will help, but only if works. Every MPG product has proven to be snake oil from what iv read.

  28. I have been using Royal Purple in my OTM for 10 years or so, well worth the extra $.

My shifter would get sohot it would burn you, after RP, it runs ice cold.

I have it in the crank, tranny and diff of all my dailys.

Thank you everyone for your input I appreciate it. Now quick question for petematterson
You talked about it being problematic for the 02 sensor/mass air flow sensor with the k&n but dont think my 79's have mass airflow sensors in the system.

Also im playing with the hydrogen cell and hho has as much balls as acetylene. Look up stan meyer on you tube. I'm trying to figure out what electrical device he used to fracture the water using electrical pulses. Im trying to get people together to solve this. Any ideas thank you for stoppong by

He used what is called a pulse width modulator. You can use brute force electrolysis though, a PWM can cost anywhere from 80 - 250 bucks depending on how many amps you're looking to push into your cell.
