I was an engineer in the auto industry up North for about 10 years after college. The industry is so unstable I decided to leave it while I was young enough to change. I moved here and I've started my own business. That was OK until the real estate market fell apart. I sell construction equipment. No one's buying anything right now. I haven't had a profitable month since last October. The good news is that today I was able to get another loan and stay open a while longer. P.S. If anyone is in construction my website is milcoequipment.com

Sorry to hear that. It is not the easiest thing to go through.

  6. I don't know if you're religious or not, but I believe God gives us loads based on the amount he knows we can carry. Sounds like he believes you have a strong back. ;)
Sometimes these things work out for the better. I hope it does for you.

Good luck, and if you need help and decide to come to Michigan, I'll do whatever I can to help,

  7. We as a nation are slowly lowering our standard of living to that of 3rd world countries unfortunately. I see no real answers anywhere unfortunately. No one is really standing up and doing anything to correct our issues on the political side of things. I look at the way the real estate market has taken a dive everywhere and have made the connection to the great depression of how people are losing their homes and how farmers lost their farms during the depression. I read the posts of everyone and its awesome to see the community within the H.A.M.B. network to try and help one another. I just wish we had politicians/individuals to keep us from "HOOVERVILLE" status like we are headed.

Royalshifter keep your head up! I'm 22 I have an AA and had to go to work in the oilfields when I lost my job working for the state of KA because of cutbacks and I see light at the end of the tunnel for ya sir. There is always plenty of work down here in the krotch of Kalifornia-"Bakersfield". The oilfields always need good mechanics for the rigs and they pay well to start out. Try like 25$+an hour + benefits and retirement/stock options.

not much for traditional, most of the stuff around here is the gold chain style stuff...which I guess is where the money is for shops; but we could use some good builders here!

neither civilian or military. I do mobile, on-site maintenance/fabrication on turbine ag aircraft(crop-dusters).

I wish!! no way in hell that'll happen...all of us that are out of jobs will have to line up behind the illegals for welfare...except, who's going to make these checks good that they're handing out...oh shit again!!

not sure what you're getting at there, maybe I'm too tired right now...lawyers dug into some BS legislation already in place(on behalf of some tree-hugging groups), had it re-interpreted and viola!, instead of diverting water to farmland and storage basins(you know, those big man made lakes we're supposed to fill up for when we have a drought...)...now we're diverting water out to the ocean to keep the smelt alive. what are the smelt good for? absolutely nothing. we're literally throwing our economy away to keep these trash feeder fish alive.

They are just two-bit tyrants looking to force their enightened visions on the masses, and gain wealth and power in the process. The socialist rhetoric is just the angle that gets them there the easiest.

They want it now because the ulitmate goal of a politician is to get reelected or elected to a higher office. They don't care about the lasting effects of their policies after they are gone.

Sorry y'all, I get rather passionite about politics. I'll shut up now.

A lot of the moaning and crying about the economy is PURE MEDIA driven.
That is like the " home foreclosure emergency " NEWS that seems to be on every TV news program and a lot of folks minds.

ONLY 6 out of every 1,000 homes ... in America are in foreclosure.
That is less than 1 per cent !!

    What emergency ??

Another thing is there are areas here in fresno That 4 out of ten houses are in forclosure thats 40% .Yes some areas are alot lower but it costs less to live there. My brother bought a new house just before the housing crash here. Now they are selling the same new home in the same track for 150000.00 less. He is now upside down and stuck in it.At least he hasnt lost his job.........

It's only an emergency when it happens to you. In California, the unemployment rate is over 7%. Many labor jobs have been lost to illegals as employers are willing to break the law for the extra almighty dollar. If nothing else this flood of cheap labor has depressed wages. They have taken over the construction jobsl The aerospace and defense industry is decimated. Welding/fabrication in the remaining ship yard used to be a good paying profession. Not now. Though California has some of the highest foreclosure rates in the country, it hasn't been taking place in my immediate area. What is happening is multiple generations living in the same house, renting out rooms, etc. Wether it's good or bad is relative to your situation.

    Dude ... you haven't a CLUE ...
It is the trickle down effect. With the MEDIA all crying and whinning, folks pull back and then the economy does get softer. The softer it gets ... the more the media drives it ... then it gets even softer.

Just like in 1929 ... everyone says the banks are getting close to failure ... so everyonee ran down to the bank and withdrew their money ... Well guess what ... then the banks did fail ...

The economy has some issues ... TRUE but ... the media has been been making a mountain out of mole hills. JUST LIKE the housing foreclosures. With less than 1 per cent in foreclosures ... that is NOT a emergency ... unless it is your own house.

A lot of the foreclosures are folks would bought way more house than they could afford, and the greedy banks making risky loans at high interest rates. Most loans that used to require a 10 per cent down ... are not in foreclosure. Because financially responsible folks ... ( who had 10 per cent down ) are stable enough to make the payment.

Folks who go in debt with no reserve $$ fund ... ( who live paycheck to paycheck ) are mostly the ones in trouble now.

I do realize that some areas are affected worse than others ( Michigan ) ... Unemployment in my state is less than 5 per cent ... I have been offered two jobs since the first of the year ... and I am not even looking for work. ( retired and loving it :D ).

I live in Michigan....Metro Detroit...and here foreclosures ARE an emergency. I had my house forclosed on last year in October. When I moved out, I was one of ELEVEN forclosed houses on my block alone. I'm talking 11 houses out of 50 houses on a block! Our unemployment rate is the highests is ever been, and our rate of pay for unemployment is one of the lowest in the country. On top of that, they just recently put back into effect the 13 week extension for unemployment to help out. Meaning...up until about 4 months ago, you only had unemployment benefits for 6 months. That way, when Bush or our equally stupid Governor had to make a State Of address, they could say the unemployment rate was going down. It wasn't going down, you just no longer qualified for benefits so you were no longer a statistic.

As far as having money to fall back on, that's good in theory, and its true, but it sure goes fast. I was laid off for 3 years with nothing coming in after the first 6 months. I had 40g in the bank, but with house payments, taxes, utilities, and just a basic overinflated cost of living....that money goes FAST! Plus, with not working, I no longer had medical benefits....so when I got sick it all had to come out of pocket.

I'm not bitching at anyone, but what I'm trying to bring to light is that its not always easy to just find something else to do.....especially in a state full of displaced auto workers who are also trying to "find something else to do". The MINUTE that the Big 3 started outsourcing, it trickled down to the entire country. One way or another, damn near every industry in the entire country is dependent on the auto industry. When they leave, its inevitable that everything else will fail. That's a crying ass shame. But you know what...shame on them for outsourcing, because now theyre fucked too. They moved to countries that don't buy our cars. And now all the people here are too broke to afford Big 3 cars. They screwed themselves so a handful of Exec's could get a fucking bonus for cost-cutting.

Its ironic now that the foreign car makers are setting up plants all over the U.S. Maybe they're the smart ones and recognize good ol fashioned American pride and quality. Probably, because they're kicking our asses in the car market!

Its a sad day when a Ford is made in Mexico, a GM is made in India.....but a Honda is made in Ohio! It may be Japanese, but at least an American auto worker recieves a paycheck every Friday to build it.

    Sorry....rant over.

Agreed. It is just that none of that came out of Sacramento...... it is based on federal Endangered Species Act principles. (I guess I am defending California). Heck our California governor is pushing to construct new major storage reservoirs like no other I have ever seen in my life!

My point is to look to Washington DC for the root of the problem and not California. :)

I'll make this quick, if you think this is just a "Pure Media Driven problem" Sorry to say my freinds I think your just wrong. You don't believe what the media puts out but do believe what the reports from the markets say? GDP,Manufacturing, unemployment stats Why??
We have seen our country truned from a lively manufacturing base to a country full of warehousing with imports from cheap labor countries. I can go on and on because I'm in Manufacturing and had to lay folks off. It kills me everytime I think about the families out of work. We're down to the bone and still believe in the American way and look forward to our leaders to turn this around. But lets quit Bullsh!ting folks and solve the issues. True the Media doesn't help but suger coating bad news and bailing out bad decision's..

If you read the entire statements I have made in this thread ... I recognized that Michigan ( and some others ) ... are in trouble. There is no denying that. And I did not say ALL of the trouble was media caused.

But a lot of what is going on is media driven. Bad news make the papers sell and gives the TV talk show folks something to talk about.

The original thread starter ( and I do feel for his situation ) ... was offered a JOB. He has a option. I realize with a wife and kids ... moving your family half way across the USA is not a easy thing. But then neither is unemployment ... and California has a high unemployment rate. Memphis ... has no state income tax ... and low property taxes. Lots better than California ...

I have never lived in Memphis so I cannot talk about the quality of life there.

I got rolled in 1999 out of 18 1/2 years on the best team going. Bad thing was they went belly up and I lost one hell of a pension. But I kept on pushing, and it wasn't until 4 years ago I started losing my health and vision. I got some great experience in that time, it was priceless. If I had stayed healthy I would still be going at it. I really miss working.

You will find your way, I don't know you personally, but I just have a feeling that you will. Grieve over the loss and look for your next gig. It will come.

I've got family and friends in the northern part of Sacramento Valley feeling the pinch too. Good luck and hang in there. It'll all unfold as it should, and in your favor.

Skip, you had mentioned something about them closing, Cargill had bought out a very large farming operation in Dinuba few years back, They didn't last long there either. Lost big money from what I hear. Had a couple of friends loose jobs, One's doing resorations, The other does chassis work. They never looked back.
I've seen your work man, you'll never go hungry!!! Besides Snow and White nearing retirement? Just thinkin' out loud......
