I just ordered a Summit universal aluminum radiator for my 63 Chevy C-10. I already got the mounting situation figured out. The little stock radiator for the 230 6cyl was not enough for the V8 I have a couple of dumb*** questions for you I was wondering what I should do for my radiator cap? I know there are different types of caps. I have seen them rated at different PSI.. Also was wondering If I need some sort of overflow container or will a hose routed down to the bottom of the radiator support surfice? There was not a overflow tank on the truck when I got it. Last thing. My engine is from a 85 Chevy 1/2 ton the stock thermostat is 195 should I stick with that or should I get maybe something lower like a 180? Am I making this more complicated then I need too? I'm very good at that.. Thanks for the help.
Yeah you're making it more complicated. PSI I cant really answer Overflow is a smart but not a must have. You can use anything that will hold water and will fit in the space, they sell nice aluminum tanks too. Temp, just depends on your driving habits, your location, and your preference. Living in Cali I would ***ume your 195 would be fine. Kind of the If it aint broke dont fix it theory.
I would use a closed system which consists of a tank and a cap for the closed system. I bought a kit from Pep Boys a few years back that worked great and kept my car from over heating. It basicly returns the water and antifreeze back to the radiator when it cools down instead of dumping it out on the ground. This keeps your radiator topped off at all times.
